Play it like Gilden ! 2

(English version at the bottom of the page)

Play it like Gilden !

Play it like Gilden !

Last week, we experienced a snowy episode in the region of Aix-en-Provence. It’s pretty rare and it’s quickly a mess. We had more than 20 cms of snow at Jouques to the delight of the children who had fun like crazy in the powder. It was a little Christmas before the hour. All this fallen snow gave a little air of holidays on this Saturday of the beginning of December.

Given the amount of snow we had on the side of Jouques, I thought that Aix-en-Provence under his white coat would be interesting to photograph. As I had to go to work that day, I left earlier from home, to be sure to be able to join my place of work but also to make a small Street Photo session in Aix. What was my surprise to see that finally there was absolutely nothing in Aix ! It’s too hot in the city. It snowed well, but the snow turned immediately into water once on the ground. In the end I was waiting for snowy streets, I was left for streets just soaked like after a heavy shower …

Well, you have to do with it. So here I am in Aix with a gray sky with no sun and no snow … In spite, I thought I could at least enjoy myself using my built-in flash and slow shutter speeds (1/32 s). Play it like Gilden ! Rest assured, I have no claim to come to the ankle of the Master. The title is misleading, but I found it catchy and it was a small reference to the movie “Play it like Beckham”. Some are not fan of his work, finding his way of proceeding very aggressive. His practice of photography does not leave indifferent. We like him or we hate him. Personally, I love his work, not only his very raw Street Portraits but also his work on Coney Island. Let’s go back to using the flash. I do not think I use it like him. What I find interesting is to use slow speeds to capture the movement as well. I do not know the Guide Number (the lighting power of the device) of my built-in flash, but it is not high and its range is quite small. I would need a stronger external flash. If Santa hears me, he can slip me into the shoes in a few days (I was relatively wise this year … I think …).

The use of flash is quite intimidating in the street. No more discretion ! Since my built-in flash is not powerful, I had to be close enough to people to reach a suitable result, and I can tell you that when you use the flash within one meter of people’s faces, you do not go unnoticed. Yet I did not have any comments from the people photographed. Why ? I played the perfect Asian tourist a little noob who uses his flash even in the middle of the day. ! And it works ! People even apologized for being “unintentionally” past my camera as I took the picture.

The only thing I found annoying was the lag I had between the moment I pressed the shutter button and the moment the flash was fired. It was quite embarrassing because I had to take into account when I took the photo adding a little random in the shooting. In the end I am quite pleasantly surprised by the result. I do not intend to specialize in this type of photos, but I had fun that day, failing to photograph Aix-en-Provence under the snow !

Snow!!…in Aix?? Well evidently not where you needed it, but fantastic at home for the children. Grey flat skies, damp streets are what I usually have to work with… I like Bruce Gilden so a flash would liven up things, a good idea Jeff. Father Christmas I’m sure is aquatinted with eBay where he or she can find an external flash, plus all those little accessories to help direct the light…then you’ll be able to do with light what Mr Beckham does with a football….“Bend it like Chane-Mouye” the sequel!

Snow in Provence turns rapidly into a nightmare. But the kids enjoyed it for a few days. I should have gone walking in the morning to make some photographs of the landscape with its snowy blanket, but I prefered staying home. Too cold… I was really hoping to see some snow downtown. This flash thing was amusing. Especially considering that the light was missing but this kind of photo is quite agressive. So fun but to use sparingly.
