Belsunce breakdown.

(English version at the bottom of the page)

Belsunce Breakdown.

Belsunce fleuron des quartiers phocéens (Belsunce flagship of the Phocéens districts)

(Stuck between the Railways Station and Le Vieux Port)

These words are taken from the song Belsunce breakdown of Bouga, a Rapper born in Belsunce (Marseille).

My companion working from time to time in Marseille, I happen to go down there to have lunch with her. I take this opportunity to hit the streets of Marseille. I do not know very well the city nor its neighborhoods. Today, I’m heading to Belsunce!

Belsunce is the name of the bishop of Marseille, who during the great plague of 1720 donated all his possessions to help his compatriots. The Marseillais invented, from this attitude, the expression to arrive like Belsunce, that is to say to arrive with empty hands at someone of which one is the guest.

The area is not really touristy and the locals rather suspicious at the sight of a camera. Belsunce has a rather sulphurous reputation. The most represented community is the North African community.

I headed to La Porte d’Aix because it is very colorful. I was relatively discreet with my Ricoh GRD IV, but a tall Asian guy still catches the eye. I was even made to understand that it was better to take pictures on the side of Le Vieux Port, it was down there my place .

I let myself be guided by the light in the neighborhood. Finally Belsunce is a neighborhood like any others one, with its small shops, deliverers…

There is a lot of traffic in the streets and there are lots of opportunities to take pictures. But here too, you have to be quite discreet and not too intrusive.

At no time did I feel insecure. I was thrown a few questioning glances but nothing more.

There are sceneries I would have liked to photograph, but I did not. I self-censured myself, lest my approach be misinterpreted. There are no tourists in Belsunce and an Asian guy with a camera as small as it is, is suspicious …

I would like to visit the neighborhood with a local to have this small deposit which would allow me to make the pictures that I dare not.

Going to Belsunce means traveling. Visually already with its small grocery stores, its small shops where you can by anything! There are also those delicious odors from small restaurants or other grocery stores that take you to the other side of the Mediterranean sea.

In the end I am pretty happy with this little Street Photography walk in Belsunce. This neighborhood with its bad reputation rather interested me and I intend to go back to continue to discover it.

  1. You came out in one piece Jeff. I do t think all these neighbourhoods are as dangerous as people make out, however one has to be careful. Anyhow, well worth the risk judging by the amount of images you produced I’d say.

    Keep Well and Safe!

  2. You came out with flying colours Jeff. Wonderful collection of photos well documented of the neighbourhood.

    1. Hello Tyson, I won’t say that we should make this neighborhood, a must sightseeing in every good travel guide of Marseille, but for the ones who want to see the city differently, it’s worth going there!
