This is my Capetown !

I’ve just spent 15 days in South Africa. On my own, without my wife or children. Why? The first week was spent on English lessons. It’s part of my job to maintain a good standard of English. I’d decided to extend my stay by a week to explore the Cape area a bit. Yes, I forgot to mention it, but I only stayed in Cape Town. I’d planned to stay there to do a bit of street photography. Yes, you could say I’m a lucky chap to be able to treat myself to a whole week just for myself.

Malaysia Street Photography

I’m going to make the most of our recent trip to Malaysia to write a few posts and, whilst I’m at it, share some of the photos I took whilst I was there. In just over two weeks spent in Asia, I was far more productive than I’d been in several months spent on the streets of Saint-Denis. It’s not a question of comparing what I do in my own town with what I can achieve far from home in exotic places like Malaysia. The term ‘exotic’ carries no negative connotations when I use it. I’m simply talking about things that are out of the ordinary for me. Going to mainland France – to Paris or Marseille – would be just as ‘exotic’ for me!

First week with the Ricoh GR IV …

What? What on earth is he on about? Less than two weeks ago, he was swearing up and down that it was out of the question. That even though the GR III was on its last legs, there was no way we were replacing it! Pfff, and to think he’s always going on about not focusing on the gear and how we shouldn’t listen to the manufacturers’ siren calls urging us to buy the latest versions of their cameras with their loads of megapixels. And now this chap goes and buys the latest Ricoh GR?

Half broken

We’ve been in Malaysia for just over a week now. Time for an initial round-up! After spending four days in Kuala Lumpur, we took the bus to Taman Negara in the centre of the country. What can I say about these first few days in Malaysia? OMG! In recent years, we’d already visited two other major Asian cities: Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. Well, Kuala Lumpur is even more modern! One thing that’s quite different from Thailand and Vietnam is that there’s very little going on here early in the morning. I’d been planning to get up early and make the most of it for some street photography, but that’s out of the question!

Right place, right time

A few months ago, I shared some photos with you that I took at the Francofolies festival. You can read the article about this music festival here. Last weekend, I went to another music festival taking place in the south of the island, in the town of Saint Pierre. Unlike the Francofolies, the Sakifo festival features international artists from abroad, not just French-speaking artists.

G.A.S

G.A.S. stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. It’s something that affects a lot of photographers. The compulsive buying of cameras and lenses to satisfy this urge, fuelled by manufacturers who are constantly churning out new models to tempt us. It has to be said that new cameras are very often better than older ones if you look at the raw specifications. More megapixels, better low-light performance, image stabilisation…

The swimming pool

During the kids’ second week of the holidays, we rented a small house in the west of the island, just a stone’s throw from two rather popular spots: Boucan Canot and Les Roches Noires. Two places, two atmospheres. Boucan Canot has always been a favourite with young people, who flock there in droves. It’s also the first beach you come to when heading west from the north of the island. Les Roches Noires attracts fewer people. The beach is nestled between the marina and the town. People go there for the beach, but also for the town of Saint-Gilles, which has an aquarium, diving schools and shops. In short, you can see that it doesn’t attract the same sort of crowd.

Looking back year 2025

This is the tenth year that I have been writing this blog, which summarises the past year by presenting my work. 2025 began with a trip to Vietnam and ended with a trip to Nosy Be. Two places where I had a blast taking photos. It’s difficult to take an objective view of what I did in Saint-Denis for the rest of the year. These two interludes distort my perception of the streets of Saint-Denis. Inevitably, the streets of my city seem dull compared to these two trips. But ultimately, what I do in Saint-Denis should be seen as a long-term project that is not limited to two or three weeks, but rather as the work of a lifetime. So yes, Vietnam and Nosy Be were fantastic, but what I do in Saint-Denis is what defines me.

2025 is dead ! Hail to 2026!

2025 ended without me having the time (or the will, or the motivation…) to share my photos from November and December with you… And yet there were some interesting things that will remain in limbo on my computer. So you can consider yourselves lucky to have escaped the Highlights of November and December.
