Street Photography Tips : Triangles

Lauren Welles : A “Metzkeresque” photo (look up Ray Metzker, if unfamiliar with his work). Perfect lines, shadows, light and triangles – Fundamental elements of good composition. While I often see work like this in Street Photography, I think that verticals are much harder to get right and this one does it perfectly, making use of evey inch of the frame. 2016 re-processing

I told you that I had started working on a book that would bring together photos of my 3 years spent in the streets of Aix-en-Provence. I have already made a selection of about 130 photos. I had paused this project because I was not satisfied with the processing of some old photos. The problem is that I no longer had control over these photos because I had lost the RAW files during a hard drive crash. Finally, I accidentally dropped the HDD on the ground and since then it no longer worked. I still waited 4 years before looking into the issue. So I sent the faulty HDD for a clean room data recovery. It cost me the tidy sum of € 800 … Continue reading 2016 re-processing

Behind this shot : Girls in a tutu

The first thing that came to my mind when I post-processed this photo is The Smiths song : Vicar in a tutu. This photo was taken in front of the church where my sister got married 12 years ago for the record. It does not make me younger … I told myself that it would be nice to see a vicar in a tutu like the two little girls. It would make an original photo ! This song is taken from the album The Queen is Dead released in 1986. Yes definitely, it does not make me younger … Even though the album is full of more famous titles, I have always had a soft spot for this song. Morrissey’s waxing lyrical and Johnny Marr’s guitar are characteristic of this bygone era.

99 from Vasco Trancoso

Four years ago, I was interviewing Vasco Trancoso. I invite you to reread the Blog written at the time here. This week I had the pleasure of receiving his first photo book printed in 1000 copies published at the end of last year. In the meantime, an unprecedented health crisis began, making it impossible to find the book in all the good shops. However, you can get your hands on it by sending to him an email. I will give you all the details at the end of the article.

Street Photography in Saint-Denis

I will soon be living in Reunion Island for a year. Next October, I will blow out my first candle. Last year when I left Aix-en-Provence, I had spent the last 3 years walking the streets of this city. I knew it perfectly. Even though I found it intimidating to photograph people when I was starting out, in the summer of 2019, before embarking for Reunion Island, I had reached a stage where I no longer wondered where things were going. Everything was fluid and simple on the street.

Just be yourself. Keep it real

It’s unfortunate that we live in a society where the value of people is quantified by likes, followers and views. So many people are seeking attention for the wrong reasons. I think we should all be doing our best work without looking for accolades or seeking reward (…). Your worth (invaluable) should never be based on other people’s approval (ephemeral). Just be yourself. Keep it real. Keep it moving. Do all things with absolute purity, love and joy. And always do your best.

Behind this shot : Cartoon life

Do you remember the oldest of you Space Jam ? The movie released in 1996 where Bugs Bunny gives the answer to his Airness : Michael Jordan ? It was not the first film of its kind because in 1988 was released Who framed Roger Rabbit, a film also mixing cartoon characters with real actors. This afternoon, before picking up Joachim from school, I passed a store that asked a graphic designer from Reunion to work with them on a collection of clothes. This is Vast.

Shooting Street during holidays

Two weeks ago, we spent four days in the south of the island. With the virus raging, we decided to stay home and do some local tourism. We didn’t get very far. Barely 1.5 hours drive. We could also have made the road every day from home to go to the different spots we had targeted, but it’s a change of scenery for the children and for us not to be at home. We had booked a charming little chalet that looked like a treehouse just 20 mins from the sea. Continue reading Shooting Street during holidays

Ricoh GR3 : Go back to work Pentax/Ricoh

I was offered a Ricoh GR3 in October of last year. Since then I had hardly used it. It spent more than 2 months in after-sales service because of an overheating problem. Pentax had changed the optical unit without giving more details. What is funny is that I had sent a Ricoh GRD4 some time ago and there too, the optical unit had been changed … Is this the magic repair of Pentax ? The Ricoh GR3 slept peacefully in its box. I was using the Ricoh GR and I didn’t see the point of changing cameras as it did the job very well. I nevertheless wanted to test this Ricoh GR3 to find out how good this camera was. So I shot exclusively with the GR3 for 4 weeks. The problem is that at the end of these 4 weeks, I went on vacation with two cameras: the GR3 and the GRD4. From the first day, I did not hesitate and I took the Ricoh GRD4 to take my photos. It’s not a very good sign when a camera released in 2011 has my preference … It’s true that I love it, but it’s not to say that I’m shooting with a retro camera ! This is simply because this camera is better for what I use it for. I do not do landscape, architecture. I exclusively do Street Photography in addition to documenting the life of my family. Undeniably for these two practices, the Ricoh GRD4 outclasses the Ricoh GR3. Let’s get straight to the heart of the matter and I’ll tell you about the Pros and Cons of the Ricoh GR3. It is not a test like you are used to seeing.
