You must tell yourself that I have nothing more to show you to go dig through photos almost 5 years old to write a Blog. I wanted to rework these photos as I will do today. Besides, there are photos that I had not even deigned to post-process at the time and that I find interesting today. Tastes change over the years. I also decided to work them only in color and it’s true that it changes a lot of things.

What do I have left of this week in Liverpool ? An impression of not having taken advantage as I would have of this city. It’s easy to tell in hindsight, but there was a lot more to do than what I did. We do not have the same perspective on things with 6 months or 6 years of practice ! At the time I didn’t really know what interested me in the street. Today, I have a lot more certainties and of course I have a keener eye to see or anticipate certain things.

It’s not tomorrow the day before that I’m going back to Liverpool and revisiting these photos is a good way to travel during this complicated period. One of my big projects would be to revisit all the cities where I was able to do Street Photography. I want to see if my vision of the city has changed. See if these are the same things that will catch my eye. So I would have to remake myself, Aix-en-Provence, Bristol, Paris, Rome, Marseille, Toulouse and therefore also Liverpool! Strongly hope that vaccination progresses for a return to normality …

Cette chanson est devenue l’hymne du Liverpool Football Club. A l’époque où je donnais encore des titres à mes photos, j’avais intitulé celle-là : “You’ll never skate (walk) alone !”. Il y a 18 mois, je m’envolais pour une dizaine de jours dans la cité des Reds. Et aussi des Blues, comme me le rappelle mon ami anglais John Harper. Oui il y a aussi le Club d’Everton dans la cité de Liverpool. Mais demandez à n’importe qui en France à quoi leur fait penser Liverpool et tout le monde vous répondra sûrement : Le Liverpool Football Club et aussi les Beatles ! Personne ou presque ne vous citera Everton ou encore Billy Furry !

J’avais le choix entre plusieurs villes anglaises pour ce séjour. Londres, Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford ou encore Bristol. J’avais d’emblée éliminé Londres. Je suis un peu paranoïaque et je tenais absolument à éviter les grandes villes dans le contexte actuel. Les événements récents ont montré que même des villes de la taille de Manchester ne sont pas à l’abri. Nous l’avons appris aussi l’année dernière avec le drame de Nice… D’ailleurs j’ai longtemps hésité entre Manchester et Liverpool. Au final ce sera Liverpool !

J’ai passé au final une dizaine de jours à arpenter les rues de Liverpool avec mon Fuji XE2 autour du cou. Ce séjour là bas a changé beaucoup de choses à ma manière de photographier. Comme j’ai pu le dire dans des articles précédents, c’est là bas que j’ai commencé à faire pour la première fois des photos en couleur. Ça va être difficile à croire, mais ce mois de septembre 2016 a été particulièrement ensoleillé et chaud. J’ai dû avoir un seul jour de mauvais temps et de pluie sur la totalité de mon séjour. Les photos sont là pour le témoigner, je n’ai eu pratiquement que du soleil ! Est ce pour ça que j’ai commencé la couleur ? Je n’en sais rien. Chez moi à Aix-en-Provence, on a pratiquement que du soleil aussi. Et pourtant tout mon travail est en N&B.

Durant mon passage là-bas, j’ai aussi eu l’opportunité d’assister à un Workshop donné par Matt Hart (un ambassadeur Fuji UK) durant une petite journée. On était que 3 lors de ce Workshop. Au final c’était amusant, Matt a pu nous montrer un peu quelques coins intéressants de la ville, mais au final j’ai rien appris. En fait je sais pas vraiment quelle est vraiment l’utilité des Workshops ? Sinon passer un peu de temps avec des photographes confirmés… Bon après tout, ça ne m’a pas coûté cher et ça m’a fait bosser mon anglais parler (enfin quand je comprenais l’accent de Liverpool…).

C’est aussi là-bas que j’ai commencé mon projet “Windows”. Un projet assez simple qui consiste à photographier les gens de l’autre côté de la vitrine. Un autre projet que je laisse tout doucement mourir… Oui je sais, je ne suis pas très assidu… J’ai aussi commencé à faire du Light/Shadow. Un comble ! Il a fallu que j’aille dans une cité anglaise réputée pour son taux d’ensoleillement pour me mettre à faire du Light/Shadow.

En tout cas, une chose est sûre, ce passage à Liverpool a changé ma façon de voir les choses, ma façon d’appréhender la rue. Le fait de me retrouver loin de chez moi pour faire de la Street Photo, m’a décomplexé. Je n’étais plus chez moi, j’étais un parfait touriste en territoire anglais et j’agissais comme un touriste. Même si j’ai passé beaucoup de temps dans les rues de Liverpool, je ne pense pas avoir capté l’âme de cette ville. Je n’avais que 6 mois de pratique quand j’ai séjourné à Liverpool et je n’avais pas encore mon Ricoh GRD IV. Je pense que si je devais refaire ce voyage, mes photos seraient assurément différentes. Surement en monochrome…

En 2019, je vais devoir passer encore une dizaine de jours de l’autre côté de la manche. Plusieurs villes m’attirent : Manchester, Cambridge, Oxford, Edinbourgh ou même Dublin. J’ai déjà été dans certaines de ces villes, mais j’y retournerai bien. On verra bien… En tout cas ça me fait bizarre de montrer ces photos faites il y a un peu plus d’un an. Je me souviens parfaitement des endroits où elles ont été prises. J’ai beaucoup aimé Liverpool. J’y retournerai un jour pour sur !

You’ll never walk alone !

This song became the hymn of the Liverpool Football Club. At the time when I was still giving titles to my photos, I had entitled this one : “You’ll never skate (walk) alone !”. Eighteen months ago, I flew for a dozen days in the city of the Reds. And Blues, as my English friend John Harper reminds me. Yes there is also the Everton Football Club in the city of Liverpool. But ask anyone in France what makes them think Liverpool and everyone will answer you surely : The Liverpool Football Club and also the Beatles ! Nobody will mention Everton or Billy Furry !

I had the choice between several English cities for this language trip. London, Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford or Bristol. I had eliminated London immediately. I am a little paranoid and I absolutely wanted to avoid big cities in the current context. Recent events have shown that even cities the size of Manchester are not immune. We also learned it in 2016 with the drama of Nice … Besides, I hesitated for a long time between Manchester and Liverpool. In the end it will be Liverpool !

I spent the ten days roaming in the streets of Liverpool with my Fuji XE2 around my neck. This trip there changed a lot of things in my way of photographing. As I was able to say in previous articles, it is there that I started to make color photos for the first time. It’s going to be hard to believe, but this month of September 2016 was particularly sunny and hot. I had to have only one day of bad weather and rain on the whole of my stay. The photos are there to testify, I had almost only sun ! Is that why I started the color ? I do not know. At home in Aix-en-Provence, there is almost only sun too. And yet all my work is in monochrome.

While there, I also had the opportunity to attend a workshop conducted by Matt Hart (a Fuji UK ambassador) for a short day. There were only 3 of us at this Workshop. In the end it was fun, Matt was able to show us some interesting spots of the city, but in the end I learned nothing. In fact I do not really know what are we supposed to learn during these Workshops ? Otherwise spend some time with confirmed photographers … After all, it did not cost me much and it made me work my English speaking (finally when I understood the accent of Liverpool …).

It’s also here that I started my “Windows Project”. A fairly simple project that involves photographing people on the other side of the window. Another project that I let slowly die … Yes I know, I’m not very diligent … I also started doing Light/Shadow. A height ! I had to go to an English city known for its sunshine rate to start doing Light/Shadow.

In any case, one thing is certain, this passage to Liverpool has changed my way of seeing things, my way of understanding the street. Finding myself away from home to do Street Photo uninhibited me. I was no longer at home, I was a perfect tourist in English territory and I acted like a tourist. Although I spent a lot of time in the streets of Liverpool, I do not think I have captured the soul of this city. I had only 6 months of practice when I stayed in Liverpool and I did not have my Ricoh GRD IV yet. I think that if I had to redo this trip, my photos would certainly be different. Surely in monochrome …

In 2019, I will have to apply to another language trip on the other side of the channel. Several cities attract me: Manchester, Cambridge, Oxford, Edinbourgh or even Dublin. I have been to some of these cities, but I’d be pleased to go back again. We’ll see … In any case it makes me weird to show these pictures made a little over a year ago. I remember exactly where they were taken. I loved Liverpool. I will go back one day for sure !
