Hier c’était journée Vide-Grenier/Brocante à Jouques. Ça fait un moment qu’on avait coché cette date sur notre calendrier. On avait décidé ma femme et moi que 2017 serait “L’année du Vide” !
Voilà presque 10 ans qu’on vit dans notre maison et on en a accumulé des choses… Les week-end précédents, on avait fait tous les tiroirs et armoires pour rassembler ce qu’on allait vendre au Vide-Grenier.
Ce dimanche matin, nous voilà partis avec la voiture remplie à ras bord prêt à jouer aux marchands. Ce fût une magnifique journée quasi estivale. N’étant pas habitués à ce genre de manifestation, Peggie notre voisine du jour, nous a fait une place sous son grand parasol pour éviter qu’on brûle au soleil. C’est à ça qu’on différencie les habitués des amateurs.
Ça faisait un moment que mon “Projet Jouques” était à l’arrêt. Manque de motivation… C’était l’occasion de le relancer un peu en ce beau dimanche de mai. J’ai abandonné un peu ma chère Gwen sur son stand quelques instants pour arpenter les allées avec mon Ricoh GRD IV.
Cette Brocante/Vide-Grenier a lieu deux fois par an et rencontre toujours un petit succès. J’ai pu discuter avec des brocanteurs qui viennent de Lyon (3 heures de route quand même…) et qui me disaient qu’ils l’appréciaient bien et que c’était la dixième année où ils étaient présents. Les exposants du Vide-Grenier semblaient par contre dire que c’était pas terrible ces dernières années…
Bref, nous on était là pour se débarrasser de plein de choses et au final, les affaires ont été plutôt bonnes. Faut dire qu’on était pas difficile et qu’on a tout bradé à moins de 5€. La plupart des articles partant même à 2 voire 1€… Le but était de faire le vide.
Cette journée de dimanche aura été très amusante, mais très fatiguante aussi. Allez on remet ça dans dix ans quand on aura à nouveau accumulé trop de choses !

In praise of Emptiness
(Garage Sale in Jouques).
Yesterday it was the D Day : Garage Sale/Brocante in Jouques. It’s been a while since we checked this date on our calendar. We had decided my wife and I that 2017 would be “The Year of Emptiness”!
We have been living in our house for almost 10 years and we have accumulated too many useless stuff … The previous weekends, we had made all the drawers and cupboards to collect what we were going to sell at the Garage Sale.
This Sunday morning, we left with the car filled to the brim ready to play the merchants. It was a wonderful sunny day. Not being accustomed to this kind of event, Peggie our neighbor of the day, made us a place under her massive umbrella to avoid that one burns in the sun. That’s what we differentiate the regulars from the amateurs…
It had been a while since my “Projet : Jouques” was stopped. Lack of motivation … It was the occasion to revive it a little on this beautiful Sunday of May. I gave up my dear Gwen on her stand a few moments to walk my Ricoh GRD IV in the alleys.
This Brocante/Garage sale takes place twice a year and always meets a relatively good success. I was able to discuss with second-hand dealers who came from Lyon (3 hours by road anyway …) and who said they enjoyed it and that it was the tenth year they were present. The Garage Sale exhibitors, on the other hand, seemed to say that it was not good in recent years.
Anyways, we were there to get rid of many things and in the end, the business was pretty good. Must say it was not difficult and we sold everything at less than 5€. Most of the pieces even went to 2 or even 1€ … The goal was to get rid of everything !
This Sunday day was very fun, but very tiring too. We’ll be back in ten years when we have accumulated too many things !
It’s good to relieve oneself of clutter, although no old camera gear should really ever be sold only bought!
Those mannequins are bizarre to say the least and one of my favourites, I also like the Mirrors photo. Number 1 for me though is the Lady with the Orangina – a classic.

I was about to write an article about “getting rid of things” under a photography pov, but didn’t manage to have something consistant. I ended up with a small article about an event in Jouques, my hometown. I kind of keep my old gears. I tried to sell some old (very good lenses) on internet but hopefully didn’t sell them 😉
My parents used to do this years ago importing goods and selling them. It was interesting but I was a teenager then, I must try to find all the images I took from that time using a Zenit-E film camera which I still have.
Looking at these brought back fond memories of driving to the marketplace setting up, selling goods, watching people, packing up and driving back home lol.
It was a really cool experience Lin. What I like the most was the interaction with people. Talking to them even if they didn’t buy anything. There was something festive in the air. Next september, I will go just for fun and take pictures from the setting up to the packing up. Could be a nice documenting of the event. Hope you’ll put your hands of these old joyful pictures !
