A quick rant against YouTube. Yesterday evening I posted a slideshow of my photos taken in January. This morning, I had the unpleasant surprise to receive an email from YouTube telling me that the thumbnail of my video was censored because it violated YouTube’s policy on nudity and sex … I’ll give you the text of the mail below.

So what Jeff? Are you sharing porn pictures now? Well I admit that I had voluntarily put this photo in thumbnail to illustrate my slideshow. But I was far from thinking that I was going to shock YouTube moderators with its content! I took this photo because I wondered why they had gone so far as to reproduce the nipples on the breasts of this clothes dummy. The devil is in the details ! I showed this photo to my wife who told me that this dummy must surely come out of a sex shop. Ah yes, I had not thought of that … Anyway, I find the censorship of YouTube disproportionate. They’re not even real nipples ! In any case, I escape a more serious sanction with the strike on my YouTube channel. So I had to quickly rebricate a thumbnail to escape YouTube censorship. So where it is rant is that they censored the thumbnail, but not the content! Basically exit the nipples on the thumbnail, but I can keep them in the slideshow. Is there any logic? No, just a lot of hypocrisy from YouTube …

I put the video in question back to you. It is clear that it slams less there and I can say goodbye to my thousands of views!

As I told you, I did not have much time to hang out in the streets of Aix-en-Provence. There is a time for everything … I tried to enjoy all the tiny moments that were within my reach to keep clicking. I even made some T.M.E videos again that I did not have time to edit yet. A series of 3 videos of the same street at 3 times of the day (9am, noon and 5pm). Just to see how the city changed according to the time. This series was made during a single day where I took advantage of my breaks to quickly make some photos (and videos!) In Aix. I had less than 30 mins for each session and I had to work in a hurry, but as often for these videos, the result does not matter. The interest is simply to show you the street through my eyes.

Recently, a friend asked me how many photos I had of the streets of Aix-en-Provence. I did not know what to answer … I told myself that if I had answered “thousands”, I would go for a freak and yet I think we are more in “tens of thousands” … I just evaded saying that I had “a lot”. I preferred to engage in saying that I had quite a few photos of which I was particularly proud. I leaned a few months ago on my work by doing a sort of introspection. Since then, the photos are piling up on my computer and I do not have the time but also the strength to sort all these photos. Moreover, I should update my portfolio and also the slideshow on the front page of my site.

My friend asked me another interesting question: “What am I going to do with all these pictures? “. I found myself a little stupid, because this innocuous question sent me back a few months back where I tried to answer the question “Why Street Photography”. Almost all of my work is confidential. I spent some time on Facebook, Instagram or other sharing platforms, but for several months I’ve been away from social networks. So, why do all these photos if they will not be seen or shared ?

I deleted my Facebook account last November and it’s been 3 months since I did the same with Instagram. These few months away from social networks have appeased me. Just look at my Blogs. I found many topics in the practices that I saw through social networks. Since I am “disconnected”, I do not see these behaviors that bristled me so much the hair. More Blogs so I spent my time bitching to denounce certain practices. These few months away from Social Networks also confirmed that I was doing Street Photography for me and no one else. I do not do this to be known, for glory. The confidentiality in which I indulge is one of the proofs.

Another friend of mine told me that for him the goal was to show his pictures at exhibitions. It is true that it flatters the ego to see his pictures hung in a showroom, but precisely for what reason does one really exhibit ? Is there a message that we want to pass or is especially a question of vanity. Personally I do not really want for the moment and anyway no one offered me to expose. Well it is not quite true … I was offered to exhibit in the library of my village in Jouques, but I did not really want.

I never liked being in the light so much as to say that it is not today the day before that you will see me launching into an exhibition. I still do not feel like I haven’t gone back to the first base. There is a time for everything as I said and it is not the moment. There is something that tempts me nevertheless, it is the self-production of a book devoted to these almost four years spent walking the streets of Aix-en-Provence. This is a chapter that will end in a few months and it will be time to take stock of this period. It’s just an idea that has crossed my mind, but I do not know yet if I’ll finish this project.

For the rest, I almost want to say that it’s like the Blogs that I write. It is primarily for me that I do it. All these reflections I have in my articles are just a way to organize my thoughts about photography and about life in general. For photos, I find satisfaction in the process: walk around the streets. In an increasingly dehumanized and individualistic society, being attentive to what is happening around me, allows me to feel alive and to be part of this world. For a moment, I looked for the extraordinary on the street as if I needed that to prove to everyone that I was doing Street Photography. A little in search of a kind of legitimacy, I wanted to show that I knew how to observe the little details of the street that nobody pays attention to. Bullshit! Street Photography is mundane. Sometimes there is something unusual happening, but 95% of the time, I only photograph mundane things and that’s what I like. I do not photograph to please others, I don’t follow trendy things. It’s stupid to say but I only shoot for myself !

Bonjour, je m’appelle Jeff et je ne suis pas allé sur les réseaux sociaux depuis 4 semaines déjà … Ne vous méprenez pas, c’est une boutade et j’ai beaucoup d’empathie pour toutes ces personnes qui souffrent d’addictions et qui essayent de s’en sortir dans des thérapies de groupe. Que ce soit à cause de l’alcool ou de drogues, je reste persuadé que parler permet de mettre des mots sur des maux et donc est un pas important vers la guérison. Il s’agit d’accepter qu’on a un problème et aussi accepter que les autres puissent vous aider.

Ça fait un peu plus de 4 semaines que j’ai effacé mon dernier lien avec les réseaux sociaux. Honnêtement, je pensais que le manque allait être terrible et que ce réflexe d’aller checker son feed, de voir si des personnes avaient liké mes photos serait plus fort. Mais il n’en est rien. Rien de tout ça; la vie continue avec ou sans réseaux sociaux. il faut dire que j’ai été pas mal occupé ces dernières semaines entre les visites pour la vente de la maison, notre semaine passée en famille à Paris et maintenant à Bristol.

Je vais vous avouer que j’ai un problème avec le grignotage à la maison. Comme tous les parents qui ont des enfants en bas âge, j’ai tout plein de biscuits ou friandises qui traînent dans les placards. Et quand je m’ennuie à la maison ou si je ne suis pas en train de bricoler, j’ai tendance à grignoter. Ce n’est pas vraiment par faim (ok je suis un peu gourmand …) mais c’est essentiellement parce que je m’ennuie !  J’ai ce même sentiment en ce moment avec les réseaux sociaux. Ils ne me manquent pas car j’ai tout plein de choses qui m’occupent en ce moment.

J’espère juste me tromper car à un moment ma vie reprendra un fil plus monotone, plus routinier et ça veut dire que je recommencerais à être addictif aux réseaux sociaux ? Cette réflexion est assez intéressante car j’ai toujours dit que j’étais présent sur les réseaux sociaux pour montrer mon travail, avoir un retour sur ce que je faisais … Mais si au final j’étais sur ces réseaux pour tuer l’ennui ? C’est prétentieux de parler pour les autres. Je ne le ferais pas. C’est une réflexion qui ne concerne que moi. Je n’ai pas à juger les raisons de quiconque.

D’ailleurs on en a parlé un peu avec John Harper, cette semaine quand on s’est rencontré dans Bath. John me pointait l’absurdité et la futilité de ces plateformes mais même ça, il déclarait qu’il y était toujours. Il y a toujours certaines choses qui vous retiennent. Pour John, c’est la possibilité pour des membres de sa famille de voir les photos de ses enfants. Personnellement, j’étais arrivé à un point où plus rien de me retenait.

J’ai déjà évoqué comment ces plateformes sont très chronophages. J’en étais à près de 1h passée par jour sur Instagram. 5% de ma journée ! Vous vous rendez compte ??? Et je reste persuadé que des personnes passent encore plus de temps. Il serait beaucoup plus utile de passer cette heure à faire des photos dans la rue. Bien évidemment ce n’est pas possible car on ne fait que checker de temps en temps son feed, on ne passe pas une heure d’affilée dessus. D’ailleurs pour parler d’ennui, très souvent au travail, je checkai Instagram parce que je m’ennuyais … C’est pas si con finalement ce lien entre les réseaux sociaux et l’ennui …

Est ce que ça me manque de voir le travail des autres ? Honnêtement ? Pas vraiment. Il y a beaucoup de photos chiantes sur Instagram ou autres plateformes. Ce sont des photos sans âme qui se ressemblent toutes ou sinon des photos à l’esthétique léchée comme si la rue était un studio de shooting.  Alex Coghe a écrit un Blog il y a quelques jours qui résume tout ça. Sa conclusion était qu’il ne voulait plus être associé au terme Street Photography car la pratique était vidée de toute sa substance. Même si je suis à 200% d’accord avec Alex, je continue à penser que je fais de la Street Photography. Sûrement pas celle prônée par tous ces festivals ou soit disant collectifs influents. Je ne me laisserai pas dicter ma vision de la Street Photography qui est assez old-fashionned.

Le fait d’avoir complètement coupé les ponts avec toutes ces pollutions de l’esprit me permet d’être plus libre dans la rue. Pas de tentation de faire ce que les autres font. C’est moi avec mon Ricoh et c’est tout. Mais je continue de fréquenter les blogs de certaines personnes comme Alex Coghe, John Harper et Don Springer de manière régulière. Je suis abonné à leurs Blogs; donc je suis tenu au courant d’une nouvelle publication.

Je suis aussi réaliste. Je reviendrai tôt ou tard sur Instagram. Mais ce qui est sûr c’est que pour le moment je n’ai aucune envie de replonger dans le tumulte des réseaux sociaux. Ma passion pour la Street Photography est toujours là et je profite de chaque instant pour documenter les rues.

Social Media Anonymous.

Hello, my name is Jeff and I have not been on social networks for 4 weeks now … Do not get me wrong, it’s a joke and I have a lot of empathy for all those people who suffer from addictions and who are trying to cope in group therapies. Whether because of alcohol or drugs, I remain convinced that talking can put words on problems and therefore is an important step towards healing. It’s about accepting that you have a problem and also accepting that others can help you.

It’s been a little over 4 weeks since I deleted my last link with social networks. Honestly, I thought the lack was going to be terrible and that reflex to go check his feed, to see if people had liked my pictures would be stronger. But it is not so. Nothing of that; life goes on with or without social networks. I must say that I have been pretty busy in recent weeks between visits for the sale of the house, our week spent with family in Paris and now in Bristol.

I’ll admit that I have a problem with snacking between meals at home. Like all parents with small children, I have plenty of cookies or sweeties hanging around the cupboards. And when I’m bored at home or if I’m not working in the garden, I tend to snack all kind of stuff… . It’s not because I’m hungry (ok I’m a bit gourmet …) but it’s mainly because I’m bored ! I have this same feeling right now with social networks. I do not miss them because I have so many things that occupy me right now.

I just hope I’m wrong because at some point my life will resume a more monotonous, more routine and that means that I would start to be addictive to social networks ? This reflection is quite interesting because I always said that I was present on social networks to show my work, to have a feedback on what I was doing … But if in the end I was on these networks to kill boredom ? It’s pretentious to speak for others. I will not do it. It is a reflection that concerns only me. I do not have to judge anyone’s reasons

Besides, we talked a little with John Harper this week when we met in Bath. John pointed to the absurdity and futility of these platforms but even that, he said he was still there. There are always things that hold you back. For John, this is the opportunity for family members to see the photos of his children. Personally, I had arrived at a point where nothing was holding me back.

I have already mentioned how these platforms are very time-consuming. I was almost 1 hour a day on Instagram. 5% of my day! You realize ??? And I remain convinced that people spend even more time. It would be much more useful to spend this time doing photos in the street. Of course it is not possible because we only check his feed from time to time, we do not spend an hour in a row on it. Moreover to talk about boredom, very often at work, I check Instagram because I was bored … It’s not so stupid finally this link between social networks and boredom …

Do I miss seeing the work of others ? Honestly ? Not really. There are a lot of lame photos on Instagram or other platforms. These are pictures without soul that are all alike or otherwise pictures with aesthetics licked as if the street was a shooting studio. Alex Coghe wrote a blog a few days ago that sums it all up. His conclusion was that he no longer wanted to be associated with the term Street Photography because the practice was drained of all its substance. Even though I’m 200% in agreement with Alex, I still think I’m doing Street Photography. Surely not the one advocated by all these festivals or so-called influential collectives. I will not let myself dictate my vision of Street Photography which is old-fashionned enough.

Having completely cut the bridges with all these pollutions of the spirit allows me to be freer on the street. No temptation to do what others do. It’s me with my Ricoh and that’s it. But I continue to frequent the blogs of people like Alex Coghe, John Harper and Don Springer on a regular basis. I subscribe to their Blogs; so I’m aware of a new publication.

I am also realistic. I’ll be back sooner or later on Instagram. But what is sure is that for the moment I have no desire to plunge into the tumult of social networks. My passion for Street Photography is always there and I take every moment to document the streets.

Il y a 19 ans de ça sortait l’album Kid A de Radiohead. Un des titres qui m’avaient marqué à l’époque était How To Disappear Completely. Il y a quelques mois de ça, j’effaçais mon compte Facebook, lassé de ce support qui véhicule plus de conneries qu’autre chose. Depuis je ne postais que sur Instagram. Là aussi une certaine lassitude s’est installée et je peinais à trouver une raison valable de poster des photos sur cette plateforme. Ces derniers temps, je me suis mis à poster frénétiquement. Un peu une fuite en avant mais le plaisir n’y était plus.

J’avais l’intention de faire table rase de mon compte en effaçant toutes les photos. Pourquoi ce geste fou diront certains ? Je ne me reconnaissais plus dans les photos que j’avais partagé jusqu’à présent. Je n’en ai pas honte, mais ça ne correspond pas à ce que je fais en ce moment. J’ai commencé à les effacer une à une mais au bout d’un moment l’application ne me permettait plus de les effacer. Ça m’a un peu gonflé et sur un coup de tête j’ai effacé mon compte Instagram ! Ce n’est pas juste un coup de sang. Ça fait un moment que ça me trottait dans la tête.

Je me lasse vite de toutes ces plateformes de partage. J’ai successivement quitté 500px, World-Street.Photography, Facebook et maintenant Instagram. C’est un peu con car au final je n’ai plus d’endroit où partager mes photos. Ah si il me reste mon Blog. Vous serez les heureux happy few à profiter (ou subir au choix …) de mes photos ! Je pense néanmoins que je reviendrai un jour sur Instagram. Pas dans l’immédiat. J’ai beaucoup à faire avec le déménagement.

Ça me manquera un peu de voir le travail des autres, mais pour certains, je fréquente leurs Blogs et donc je verrai leurs photos. Comme du temps où je m’imposais des pauses “Réseaux Sociaux”, je pense que cette période sera bénéfique pour mon travail. Je vais sûrement recommencer à faire des T.M.E dans les rues d’Aix-en-Provence. Fini la distraction Instagram. J’avais regardé par curiosité le temps moyen passé sur l’application dans les options et j’étais effaré par le nombre de minutes que m’affichait l’application ! C’était du genre 50 mins/jour ! C’est tout juste énorme et pourtant je n’avais pas l’impression de passer autant de temps sur l’application. Ces plateformes sont chronophages. Je peste contre les gamins car ils passent trop de temps devant les écrans (télévision, tablette, console de jeux …), mais je fais pire que eux.

Alors que j’écris cet article, j’ai reçu un message de Michael Ernest Sweet qui s’interrogeait sur mon absence sur Instagram. C’est assez rigolo car je pense que la majorité des personnes qui me suivent ne réaliseront même pas que je ne suis plus sur Instagram. Je ne dis pas ça avec amertume. Je suis juste réaliste. J’avais pas loin de 600 followers sur Instagram. C’est beaucoup pour quelqu’un comme moi  mais en y regardant de plus près, très peu de ces followers regardaient mes photos. À se demander pourquoi ces personnes ont décidé de me suivre … Le mystère des réseaux sociaux … De mon côté, je ne suivais qu’un peu plus de 60 personnes . Mais je regardais et appréciais réellement leur travail ! Je n’étais pas un follower de complaisance . C’est une des raisons pour laquelle ce reset me fera du bien. Se refaire une virginité en se débarrassant de ces followers fantômes embarrassants .

Ce message de Michael m’a vraiment fait plaisir car ça me montre que mon travail est vraiment apprécié par certaines personnes. Je n’en doute pas mais venant d’un photographe que vous appréciez tout particulièrement ça fait un bien fou !

Nineteen years ago was released the Kid A album of Radiohead. One of the titles that marked me at the time was How To Disappear Completely. A few months ago, I erased my Facebook account, tired of this platform that conveys more bullshit than anything else. Since then, I only posted on Instagram. There too, a certain weariness settled and I was struggling to find a valid reason to post photos on this platform. In recent times, I started frantically posting. A bit of a flight ahead but the pleasure was gone.

I intended to make a clean sweep of my account by erasing all the photos. Why this act of crazyness will some people say ? I did not recognize myself in the photos I had shared so far. I’m not ashamed of them, but it does not correspond to what I’m doing right now. I started erasing them one by one but after a while the application no longer allowed me to erase them. It was a bit swollen and on a whim I erased my Instagram account !. It’s been a while since I was thinking of doing that.

I get tired of all these sharing platforms. I have successively left 500px, World-Street.Photography, Facebook and now Instagram. It’s a bit confusing because in the end I have no place to share my photos. Oh, yeah I still have my blog left. You will be the happy few to enjoy (or undergo …) my photos ! I still think I’ll be back on Instagram someday. Not in the immediate future. I have a lot to do with our next move.

I will miss a bit of seeing the work of others, but for some, I frequent their Blogs and so I will see their photos. As of the time when I imposed Social Media breaks, I think this period will be beneficial for my work. I will surely start doing T.M.E in the streets of Aix-en-Provence. No more Instagram distraction. I looked out of curiosity at the average time spent on the app in the options and I was amazed by the number of minutes that the application was showing me ! It was like 50 mins/day ! It’s just huge and yet I did not feel like spending so much time on the app. These platforms are time consuming. I pester against the kids because they spend too much time in front of the screens (TV, tablet, game console …), but I do worse than them.

As I write this article, I received a message from Michael Ernest Sweet who was wondering about my absence on Instagram. It’s pretty funny because I think the majority of people who follow me will not even realize I’m no longer on Instagram. I do not say that with bitterness. I am just realistic. I had about 600 followers on Instagram. It’s a lot for someone like me but on closer inspection, very few of these followers looked at my photos. To wonder why these people decided to follow me … The mystery of social networks … For my part, I followed a little more than 60 people. But I really watched and appreciated their work ! I was not a follower of complacency. This is one of the reasons why this reset will do me good. Restore virginity by getting rid of these embarrassing ghost followers.

This message from Michael really pleased me because it shows me that my work is really appreciated by some people. I do not doubt but coming from a photographer that you particularly appreciate it’s fucking good !

Oui je sais, ce genre d’article a maintes fois été écrit, mais je vais à mon tour donner mon avis là dessus. Récemment j’ai participé à une petite discussion sur un forum concernant la future sortie du Ricoh GR III qui approche à grand pas (fin mars). Une des personnes a dit quelque chose qui m’a fait bondir :

En ce qui concerne ce genre d’appareil, notez tout de même que toutes les images réalisées sont généralement semblables car ce genre d’appareil ne laisse pas beaucoup de marges de manœuvre. J’ai rarement vu un vrai style se dégager entre les photographes qui utilisent ce genre d’outil. C’est souvent la même chose, c’est plutôt anecdotique.

Ce qui m’a interpellé sur ce commentaire, c’est que l’auteur se trompe sur le problème. Ce n’est pas l’appareil photo qui en est la cause ! Mais la vision des photographes. J’en ai déjà parlé dans d’autres Blogs sur cette uniformisation de ce qu’on voit sur les Réseaux Sociaux. Que ce soit sur Facebook ou Instagram, nous avons des gros groupes comme #MySPC #Storyofthestreet #fromstreetwithlove #spicollective #apf #balkancollective … Ce sont ici des groupes Instagram, mais la même chose existe sur Facebook. Ces groupes sont presque tous reliés les uns aux autres. Il suffit de tagger ces groupes dans sa publication pour voir sa photo apparaître dans son feed et donc d’être visible par pour les gens qui suivent ces groupes. L’idée en elle même est intéressante. Ces mêmes groupes mettent en avant des photographes de temps à autre et c’est là où je pense que le problème se pose …

On assiste à une uniformisation de ce qui est présenté. C’est presque toujours la même chose. Suivant le groupe, vous aurez toujours le même style de photo. C’est plaisant au début quand on découvre les Réseaux Sociaux, mais rapidement vous avez l’impression qu’on vous sert à la même chose à regarder … Quand vous êtes mis en avant par ces groupes, votre photo gagne en exposition et rapidement est vue par des milliers de personnes car les abonnés de ces groupes se comptent par dizaines de milliers !

Combien de curators d’un nouveau genre par groupe ? Ils ne sont pas nombreux  c’est sûr. Je ne sais pas quels sont les critères de mise en avant des photos. Je ne remets pas en doute les curators qui sont souvent eux mêmes de très bon photographes et je n’ai aucun doute sur le fait qu’ils aient pu trouver intéressante une photo mise en avant. Mais en quelque sorte, ils imposent involontairement leur vision de la Street Photography à une large audience. Et c’est là le fond du problème. Comme toute le monde, nous avons des préférences, des photos qui nous parlent plus, d’autres auxquelles nous sommes hermétiques.

Même si ils ont reliés entre eux, les groupes se tirent la bourre pour attirer le plus de followers qui leur donneront de fait plus de légitimité. On en revient toujours aux mêmes problèmes générés par les Réseaux Sociaux. A savoir, qui a la plus grosse … Ces groupes sont donc suivis par des milliers et des milliers de personnes qui s’inspirent de ce qui est présenté. Que ce passe t’il quand ces groupes présentent le même style de photos à longueur de temps ? Vous l’aurez compris … Nous arrivons à une uniformisation de styles photographiques. On applique les mêmes recettes car les gens aiment ça et au fond, on veut que les gens nous aiment aussi. Donc on se met à faire ce qu’on voit.

Il n’y a pas de mal à s’inspirer des autres, mais si on en arrive à ne faire que ça et à ne pas développer sa propre vision, on finit dans la masse informe dans laquelle baigne la majeure partie du milieu. Qui a parlé de de Light/Shadows  ? Ce n’est pas le seul thème récurrent dans la Street Photography. Il y a d’autres clichés qui sont reproduits encore et encore comme des “Like Machines”.

Tim Huynh, un ami hawaïen avait écrit il y a quelques temps un Blog très à propos : The Street Photography Bubble. Il porte un regard très juste sur la pratique et je rejoins son avis sur le fait que les Réseaux Sociaux sont en train de tuer la  créativité en Street Photography.

Social Media is killing Street Photography.

Yes I know, this kind of article has been written many times, but I will give my opinion on it. Recently I participated in a small discussion on a forum about the future release of Ricoh GR III which is fast approaching (end of March). One of the people said something that made me jump :

Regarding this kind of camera, note that all images are generally similar because this kind of camera does not leave much room for maneuver. I have rarely seen a real style emerge between photographers who use this kind of tool. It’s often the same thing, it’s rather anecdotal.

What aroused me about this comment is that the author is wrong about the problem. It is not the camera that is the cause ! But the vision of the photographers. I’ve already talked about it in other Blogs about this standardization of what we see on Social Networks. Whether on Facebook or Instagram, we have big groups like #MySPC #Storyofthestreet #fromstreetwithlove #spicollective #apf #balkancollective … These are Instagram groups, but the same thing exists on Facebook. These groups are almost all connected to each other. Just tag these groups in his publication to see his picture appear in his feed and therefore be visible to people who follow these groups. The idea itself is interesting. These same groups highlight photographers from time to time and this is where I think the problem arises …

There is a standardization of what is presented. It’s almost always the same thing. Depending on the group, you will always have the same style of photo. It’s nice at the beginning when we discover the Social Networks, but quickly you have the impression that we serve you the same thing to look at … When you are featured by these groups, your photo gets exposure and quickly is seen by thousands of people because there are tens of thousands of followers in these groups  !

How many curators of a new kind per group ? They are not numerous for sure. I do not know what are the criteria for highlighting photos. I do not question curators who are often very good photographers themselves and I have no doubt that they could find interesting a picture to feature. But in a way, they unintentionally impose their vision of Street Photography on a large audience. And that is the essence of the problem. Like everyone else, we have preferences, pictures that speak to us more, others to which we are hermetic.

Even if they linked together, the groups are fooling around to attract the most followers who will actually give them more legitimacy. We always come back to the same problems generated by Social Networks. Namely, who has the biggest … These groups are followed by thousands and thousands of people who are inspired by what is presented. What happens when these groups present the same style of photos all the time ? You will understand … We arrive at a standardization of photographic styles. We apply the same recipes because people like it and basically, we want people to like us too. So we start doing what we see.

There is no harm in being inspired by others, but if we come to do just that and not develop our own vision, we end up in the shapeless mass in which most of the environment is bathed. Who spoke about Light/Shadows ? This is not the only recurring theme in Street Photography. There are other clichés that are reproduced again and again as “Like Machines”.

Tim Huynh, a Hawaiian friend, wrote a very timely blog about The Street Photography Bubble. He takes a very fair look at the practice and I agree with him that Social Media is killing creativity in Street Photography.

Dans un précédent Blog, je vous annonçais que je quittais Facebook. Je vous rassure tout de suite, je ne fais pas de come-back ! D’ailleurs, je ne l’ai pas évoqué dans mon Blog, mais vous savez que vous avez la possibilité de léguer votre compte Facebook à quelqu’un qui le gérerait si vous décédiez (!!!!) ? Eh oui notre ami Mark a pensé a tout, même pour permettre aux gens morts d’avoir leur page Facebook … Quand j’ai voulu effacer mon compte, j’ai eu beau chercher dans tous les menus et je ne suis pas parvenu à trouver comment effacer ce fichu compte. J’ai eu besoin d’utiliser le moteur de recherche d’un autre membre du GAFA (Google-Apple-Facebook-Amazon) pour savoir comment l’effacer.

Mais ils sont malins chez Facebook, mon compte est bien “effacé”, MAIS si je décidais de revenir dans le mois qui suit, en me connectant avec mes identifiants, on oublie tout et je retrouve toutes mes publications, photos, mes amis … C’est un peu du foutage de gueule quand même non ? En fait ils sont tellement sûr qu’on ne pourra pas se passer d’eux qu’ils nous permettent ce retour en arrière. Et je suis sûr que beaucoup de gens reviennent… Bon pourquoi je vous parle de ça ? J’ai eu 2 commentaires sur un précédent Blog (Farewell Facebook) de photographes qui avaient réagi et à qui je posais la simple question :

Si vous ne deviez montrer votre travail à personne, continueriez vous à faire des photos ?

Je reconnais que cette question est un peu extrême, mais ce qu’il y a derrière est beaucoup plus simple et je l’ai volontairement formulé comme ça pour susciter le débat. Pour beaucoup, des plateformes comme Facebook, Instagram ou Flickr sont autant de possibilités de montrer son travail aux autres et je dois reconnaître que tout photographe agit de la sorte et moi y compris. Je ne suis pas différent des autres. Le problème c’est que pour de nombreux photographes, cette course effrénée à la reconnaissance ne rime plus à rien. Le plaisir est il encore présent ou s’agit il seulement de nourrir la Bête Sociale ?

Vous vous rappelez du dessin animé Bip Bip et le Coyote ? Le Coyote se trouvait souvent piégé par le Bip Bip au dessus d’un canyon à courir dans le vide. J’avais juste l’impression que si le Coyote continuait à courir comme le faisait le Bip Bip il ne tomberait pas. Mais bien sûr il s’arrêtait et finissait irrémédiablement écrasé au fond du canyon. Cette analogie est pourrie je le conçois, mais n’est ce pas ce qui nous pousse à partager frénétiquement ? Cette peur du vide ? Ne se dit on pas que si on arrête de partager des photos, on va nous oublier tout simplement ?

Je ne vais pas vous mentir là dessus, c’est le cas. Pour l’avoir expérimenté à plusieurs reprises, on vous oublie rapidement. C’est bien la preuve que cette popularité que vous vous construisez sur les Réseaux Sociaux est éphémère et doit être entretenue avec des partages fréquents pour qu’elle perdure. Vous n’êtes pas irremplaçables et n’allez pas croire que vous allez manquer aux gens en vous retirant. La sphère sociale continue de tourner avec ou sans vous et en un clin d’œil vous ne serez plus rien.

N’y voyez aucune rancœur de ma part, c’est un choix que j’ai fait de partager peu voire pas du tout, de ne pas être actif. Chacun fait comme bon lui semble, mais je suis assez réaliste sur les rouages des Réseaux Sociaux. J’ai juste décidé de ne pas être dépendant de ces plateformes car ne nous trompons pas, Facebook ou Instagram sont juste des outils pour parvenir à ce qu’on veut. Pour certains c’est la popularité, le nombre de likes, le nombre de followers, pour d’autres c’est la reconnaissance dans le milieu, l’argent (good luck …). Et enfin il y a ceux  qui continuent de partager comme ils le feraient lors des séances de Club Photo. Bref tout un tas de raisons différentes.

Comme dans la vraie vie, plus on parle fort, plus on a de chances de se faire entendre. Ceux qui auront un ego démesuré réussiront mieux car c’est comme ça que ça marche. Ces gens auront le culot d’aller frapper aux bonnes portes, sauront comment se mettre en avant, sauront avec qui copiner. J’espère ne choquer personne en disant ça, mais c’est comme ça que ça marche ! C’est juste qu’on ne le dit pas tout haut …

Ça fait plus de deux mois que je n’ai rien posté sur Instagram, le seul endroit où j’ai encore mes photos. Est ce que ça me manque ? Pas vraiment. Je n’ai jamais été aussi actif sur mon Blog depuis en écrivant pas moins de 12 articles. Et pour vous parler plus spécifiquement de photographie, je n’ai jamais été aussi prolifique. Je me suis beaucoup éloigné de ce dont je voulais parler dans ce Blog … Pour répondre à la question que je posais plus haut, je dirai sans hésiter que même si je ne devais montrer à personne ce que je fais, je continuerai bien évidemment. D’ailleurs pour la majeure partie de mon travail c’est le cas. Je crois avoir partagé moins de 40 photos cette année sur Instagram. Si les gens jugent mon travail par ce qu’ils voient sur les Réseaux Sociaux, ils ne me connaissent pas vraiment … La rue fait partie de moi maintenant. C’est plus un état d’esprit qu’une pratique photographique. J’ai toujours mon appareil photo avec moi. Je documente ma vie et ce que je vois autour de moi. Je passe de la photo de rue à la photo de famille sans me poser de questions. J’ai passé de cap de vouloir plaire aux autres.

Comme me disait mon ami John Harper, Parfois on a l’impression d’écrire pour soi même au vu du nombre famélique de personnes qui lisent nos Blogs. Ça ne me dérange pas plus que ça. Je n’ai aucune ambition en ce qui concerne ce Blog. Si des gens se reconnaissent ou trouvent intéressant ce que je fais tant mieux, mais c’est comme pour les photos. J’écris surtout pour moi !

Un ami m’a dit que je devrais montrer mes photos en les exposant. Ce n’est pas que j’en ai pas envie, mais il faut des opportunités et surtout il faut y consacrer beaucoup d’énergie. Aujourd’hui j’ai un déménagement à préparer. Même si le temps passé dans la rue sera amené à être réduit en 2019, je n’ai pas de temps à perdre à autre chose car c’est dans la rue que j’ai le plus de plaisir. Et je reste réaliste, ça ne fait que 3 ans que je fais de la Street Photography. C’est déjà pas mal, mais c’est relativement peu pour penser à une exposition. Il y a un temps pour tout.

Shoot for yourself !

In a previous blog, I announced that I left Facebook. I reassure you right now, I do not make a comeback ! Moreover, I did not mention it in my Blog, but you know that you have the possibility to bequeath your Facebook account to someone who would manage it if you died (!!!!) ? Yes, our friend Mark thought of everything, even to allow dead people to have their Facebook page … When I wanted to erase my account, I searched all the menus and I could not find how to erase this damn account. I needed to use the search engine of another GAFA member (Google-Apple-Facebook-Amazon) to find out how to get rid of it.

But they are clever at Facebook, my account is well “erased”, but if I decided to return in the following month, by connecting with my login, we forget everything and I find all my publications, photos, my friends … Come on are you kidding ? In fact they are so sure we can not do without them that they allow us to go backwards. And I’m sure a lot of people come back … Okay, why am I talking about this ? I had 2 comments on a previous Blog (Farewell Facebook) of photographers who had reacted and to whom I asked the simple question:

If you did not have to show your work to anyone, would you continue to take pictures?

I admit that this question is a little extreme, but what is behind it is much simpler and I have voluntarily formulated it to stimulate debate. For many, platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Flickr are all opportunities to show his work to others and I must recognize that any photographer acts this way and me including. I am no different from others. The problem is that for many photographers, this frantic race for recognition is no longer worthless. Is the pleasure still present or is it only necessary to feed the Social Beast ?

Do you remember the cartoon Beep Beep the road runner and the Coyote? The Coyote was often trapped by the Beep Beep over a canyon running over a canyon. I just felt that if the Coyote kept running like the Beep Beep, he would not fall. But of course he stopped and ended irreparably crushed at the bottom of the canyon. This analogy is weird I conceive, but is not it what drives us to share frantically ? This fear of emptiness ? Do not we say that if we stop sharing photos, we will  be simply forgotten ?

I will not lie to you about it, it is. To have experienced it several times, you are quickly forgotten. This is proof that this popularity that you build on Social Networks is ephemeral and must be maintained with frequent sharing for it to continue. You are not irreplaceable and do not believe that you will miss people by withdrawing. The social sphere will keep on turning with or without you and in the blink of an eye you will be nothing.

Do not see any resentment on my part, it’s a choice I made to share little or no, not to be active. Everyone does what they want, but I’m pretty realistic about the workings of Social Networks. I just decided not to be dependent on these platforms because let there be no mistake, Facebook or Instagram are just tools to achieve what we want. For some it is the popularity, the number of likes, the number of followers, for others it is the recognition in the community, the money (good luck …). And finally there are those who continue to share as they would during Club Photo critics. In short, a whole lot of different reasons.

As in real life, the more you talk loudly, the more likely you are to be heard. Those who have an excessive ego will do better because that’s how it works. These people will have the nerve to go knock on the right doors, will know how to put forward, will know whom to flatter (cronyism). I hope I do not shock anyone by saying that, but that’s how it works ! It’s just that we do not say it aloud …

It’s been over two months since I posted anything on Instagram, the only place where I still have my photos. Do I miss it ? Not really. I have never been so active on my Blog since writing no less than 12 articles. And to talk more specifically about photography, I’ve never been so prolific. I have moved far away from what I wanted to talk about in this Blog … To answer the question I asked above, I would say without hesitation that even if I did not have to show anyone what I’m doing, I will of course continue. In fact, most of my work is the case. I think I shared less than 40 photos this year on Instagram. If people judge my work by what they see on Social Networks, they do not really know me … The street is part of me now. It is more a state of mind than a photographic practice. I always have my camera with me. I document my life and what I see around me. I go from the street photo to the family photo without asking myself questions. I did not want to please others.

As my friend John Harper told me, Sometimes it feels like writing for oneself because of the poor number of people reading our Blogs. It does not bother me more than that. I have no ambition regarding this Blog. If people recognize or find interesting what I’m doing so much better, but it’s like photos. I write especially for myself !

A friend told me that I should show my photos by exhibiting them. It’s not that I do not want to, but we need opportunities and, above all, we need to devote a lot of energy to it. Today I have a move to prepare. Even if the time spent in the street will be reduced in 2019, I have no intention to waste on anything else because it is in the street that I have the most pleasure, that I feel the more alive. And I remain realistic, it’s only been 3 years that I do Street Photography. It is not bad, but it is relatively little to think of an exhibition. There is a time for everything.

Il y a tout juste deux ans de ça, j’entrais dans la sphère Facebook. A plus de quarante ans, je vous avouerai que je n’avais jamais éprouvé le besoin d’être sur cette plateforme. Je m’étais inscrit sur Facebook pour une seule et unique raison. Entrer en contact avec des gens qui faisaient comme moi de la Street Photography. C’était il me semblait le meilleur moyen de montrer son travail pour avoir des avis sur ce que je faisais. A l’époque je débutais et je n’avais pour ainsi dire aucun repère et je ne connaissais personne qui en faisait.

Assez rapidement, Je me suis mis à poster frénétiquement sur plusieurs groupes Facebook dédiés à la Street Photography. J’avais besoin de montrer mon travail. Besoin de prouver aux yeux des autres que j’existais. Je me suis rapidement réalisé qu’au final, mes photos étaient noyées au milieu de milliers de photos postées journalièrement. On se rend compte aussi qu’il y a un certain type de photos qui attirent l’attention des curators de ces groupes. Au final, peu ou pas d’originalité. Du Light/Shadow, des Layers, des superpositions rigolotes (enfin au début …), des juxtapositions, des silhouettes … Bref je n’entre pas dans les détails mais vous voyez bien de quoi je veux parler.

Je me suis lassé de poster car j’ai trouvé assez stérile comme démarche. Quel était l’intérêt ? Je vais être honnête avec vous, c’était pour moi la recherche de reconnaissance que je mesurais bien évidemment en nombre de “like”. Oui je me suis fait avoir comme bon nombre en confondant “reconnaissance” et “like”. C’est à partir de ce moment que j’ai arrêté complètement de poster sur des groupes. Néanmoins j’ai continué à partager de temps en temps des photos sur mon compte. La meilleure chose que j’ai pu faire il y a deux ans, aura été de créer mon site internet où je peux partager ce que je veux, où n’existe pas cette pression de savoir si ma photo va être appréciée ou pas.

Au fil des mois, le nombre de followers sur Facebook est allé en grandissant. Je crois que j’en ai eu jusqu’à 500 personnes. Pour la majeure partie c’était des photographes de rue. Ce qui fait une sacrée audience si je la compare aux maigres 50 abonnés à la Newsletter de mon site. Mais sur ces 500 Followers, combien suivaient réellement mon travail ? Pas vraiment beaucoup. D’ailleurs je suivais le travail de très peu d’entre eux aussi … C’est le problème de Facebook. Les gens demandent à “être amis” avec vous car votre travail leur plaît. Vous êtes contents qu’ils vous suivent mais vous êtes obligés de suivre aussi leur travail même si il ne vous inspire peu ou pas. C’est une des raisons pour laquelle, je préfère largement Instagram. Vous pouvez suivre quelqu’un sans l’obliger à vous suivre !

L’autre chose qui m’a rapidement lassé aussi sur Facebook, c’est le ramassis de conneries qui sont partagées. Ce n’est pas parce que quelque chose est partagé que c’est vrai.  Les gens manquent de discernement et ne prennent même plus la peine de vérifier les infos. Et c’est viral ! Je pense que Facebook fait remonter le pire de chacun d’entre nous. Les gens se permettent d’être cassants, méchants car ils s’en foutent. Ils le font depuis un ordinateur et sont décomplexés. Il n’y a plus de retenue, plus de filtre. Facebook leur a donné une espèce de légitimité en les rendant unique (sic) et important (re-sic). Alors oui cet aspect me gave au plus haut point. Je n’étais venu sur Facebook que pour la photo. Pas pour ça. Si c’est le compromis à faire pour montrer ses photos, je ne suis pas prêt à l’accepter…

L’argument massue de certains est la possibilité de garder contact avec des personnes qui sont à l’autre bout de la planète et aussi avoir des nouvelles sans avoir forcément les solliciter en regardant ce que ces personnes partagent. Je me demande juste comment les gens faisaient “avant” … Facebook n’a rien révolutionné, il nous a juste rendu paresseux. Le pire c’est qu’on en arrive à avoir des amis Facebook qui habitent pas loin de chez soi qu’on ne prend même pas la peine de rencontrer ou de voir. Ça sert à quoi ? J’ai déjà vu son feed sur Facebook !

J’ai bien noirci le tableau à charge de Facebook, mais je sais que grâce à lui j’ai aussi rencontré de très bons photographes. Inutile de les nommer, ils se reconnaîtront. Je continue de suivre leur travail. Facebook a été aussi une bonne tribune pour mes blogs. Enfin au début, car depuis un an  j’ai arrêté d’alimenter mon compte et de poster des photos régulièrement. L’effet (la sanction ?) a été immédiat. Peu ou plus de visibilité pour mes blogs. Je mets ça sur le compte de l’algorithme de Facebook mais aussi sur le fait que les gens se sont lassés sûrement de mes diatribes !

Les scandales qui ont touché cette année Facebook ont aussi été déterminants. D’ailleurs en cette fin d’année, un nouveau bug avec les photos privées de 7 millions d’utilisateurs rendues publiques … C’est comme World-street.photography que j’ai quitté il y a un an. Je quitte Facebook car je ne vois plus l’intérêt d’y être. Quand vous avez fait le tour du truc, il faut passer à autre chose.  J’ai l’impression qu’il n’y a pas grand chose d’autre que Instagram pour partager son travail. On m’a parlé de Flickr  mais je n’ai pas envie de me démultiplier pour poster partout  la même chose. Instagram me convient parfaitement pour le moment même si je ne suis pas très actif en ce moment. 2019 is comind soon ! I’ll be back some day !

Farewell Facebook !

Just two years ago, I entered the Facebook sphere. At over forty, I will admit that I had never felt the need to be on this platform. I joined Facebook for one reason only. Connect with people who liked Street Photography. It seemed to me the best way to show off his work for advice on what I was doing. At the time I started and I had no reference so to speak and I did not know any Street Photographer.

Quite quickly, I began frantically posting on several Facebook groups dedicated to Street Photography. I needed to show my work. Need to prove to others that I existed. I quickly realized that in the end, my photos were drowned in the middle of thousands of pictures posted daily. We also realize that there are some types of photos that attract the attention of the curators of these groups. In the end, little or no originality. Light/Shadow, Layers, funny overlays (well at the beginning …), juxtapositions, silhouettes … In short I do not go into details but you see what I mean.

I got tired of posting because I found it pretty sterile as a gait. What was the ponit? I will be honest with you, it was for me the search for recognition that I obviously measured in number of “like”. Yes I got myself as many by confusing “recognition” and “like”. It was from this moment that I stopped completely posting on groups. Nevertheless, I continued to share pictures on my account from time to time. The best thing I could do two years ago, was to create my website where I can share what I want, where there is no pressure to know if my photo will be appreciated or not.

Over the months, the number of followers on Facebook has been growing. I think I had up to 500 people. For the most part they were street photographers. Which makes a big audience if I compare it to the meager 50 subscribers to the newsletter of my site. But of these 500 Followers, how many of them really follow my work ? Not really much. Besides I followed the work of very few of them too … This is the problem of Facebook. People ask to “be friends” with you because your work appeals to them. You are happy that they follow you but you are obliged to follow their work even if it does not inspire you very little or not. This is one of the reasons why, I much prefer Instagram. You can follow someone without asking them to follow you !

The other thing that quickly tired me on Facebook is the amount of bullshit that is shared. It’s not because something is shared that it’s true. People lack judgement and do not even bother to check the info. And it’s viral ! I think Facebook is the worst of all of us. People allow themselves to be brittle, mean because they do not care. They do it from a computer and are uninhibited. There is no restraint, no filter. Facebook gave them a kind of legitimacy by making them unique (sic) and important (re-sic). So yes this aspect piss me off. I only came on Facebook for the photo. Not for that. If this is the compromise to show his pictures, I’m not ready to accept it …

The argument of some is the ability to keep in touch with people who are on the other side of the world and also have news without necessarily soliciting them by looking at what these people share. I just wonder how people were doing “before” … Facebook has not revolutionized anything, it just made us lazy. The worst is that we have Facebook friends who live not far from home that we do not even bother to meet or see. What for ? I already saw his feed on Facebook !

This is my rant over Facebook, but I know that thanks to it I also met very good photographers. No need to name them, they will recognize themselves. I continue to follow their work. Facebook was also a good tribune for my blogs. Finally at the beginning, because for a year I stopped to feed my account and post photos regularly. The effect (the penalty ?) Was immediate. Few or none visibility for my blogs. I put this on the account of the algorithm of Facebook but also on the fact that people got tired of my diatribes surely !

The scandals that touched Facebook this year were also decisive. Moreover at the end of the year, a new bug with the private photos of 7 million users made public … It’s like World-street.photography that I left a year ago. I leave Facebook because I do not see the point of being there anymore. When you’ve done your time, you have to move on. I feel that there is not much more than Instagram to share his work. I was told about Flickr but I do not want to multiply myself to post the same thing everywhere. Instagram suits me perfectly for the moment even if I’m not very active right now. 2019 is coming soon ! I’ll be back some day !

Ça fait plus d’un mois que je n’ai rien partagé sur Instagram excepté quelques stories. Il en va de même pour Facebook que je fréquente de moins en moins. Dans mon feed j’ai un nombre incalculable de conneries partagées ou sinon de la pub … J’ai même pensé effacer ma page Facebook, mais j’ai décidé de la garder pour rester contact avec certaines personnes. Voilà où tous ces réseaux sont forts. Même si on les trouve chiants, nuls, on reste quand même dessus. Je voulais appeler ce Blog Social Media Slave, mais je trouvais plus percutant de l’appeler Social Media Bitch. Je risque de me faire reprendre de volée par une armée de féministes. Heureusement que mes Blogs sont assez confidentiels !

Depuis plusieurs semaines la France est secouée par un phénomène né sur les Réseaux Sociaux : Les fameux Gilets Jaunes. Depuis le pays est secoué par des manifestations et des blocages qui paralysent le pays. Je ne m’exprimerais pas plus sur ces événements. Ce qui me désole le plus, c’est le ramassis de conneries véhiculées par les réseaux Sociaux depuis plusieurs jours. Alors en vrac : La France n’a plus de constitution depuis janvier 2017 (sic) … La France va passer sous administration de l’ONU (re sic) … Les gens partagent sans filtres, sans se soucier si c’est vrai ou pas. On en arrive à des conneries relayées par des milliers de personnes qui y croient dur comme fer. Je ne vais pas transformer ce Blog en tribune politique, mais je veux juste pointer du doigt que les Réseaux Sociaux ont un rôle primordial dans la propagation d’informations fausses. Alors oui j’en ai marre de ces discussions de comptoir 2.0.

Feed the Beast, Be my Social Media Bitch !

Ce n’est pas vraiment pour ça que j’ai rejoint Facebook fin 2016. J’avais juste envie de partager mes photos avec la communauté. J’ai assez rapidement réalisé que Facebook n’était qu’un moyen de se mettre en avant. Un outil d’auto-promotion assez puissant, le tout agrémenté de pubs dont nous abreuve le logiciel de notre cher Mark. Depuis plusieurs mois, j’ai arrêté de partager des photos sur Facebook. J’y ai posté uniquement des Blogs. Mais l’algorithme concocté par Facebook est très malin. Vous ne jouez pas le jeu en nourrissant la bête de publications régulières, n’espérez même pas apparaître dans le feed de vos followers ! J’en avais un peu marre se participer à ce cirque. Pas envie de partager des photos noyées au milieu de pubs, de publications qui n’avaient rien à faire avec la photographie. Qui est le grand gagnant dans cette affaire ? Les photographes qui ont l’impression  que leur travail a de la visibilité ? Ne vous trompez pas … Le vrai gagnant c’est la Bande à Zuckerberg qui amasse des millions en nous polluant avec des pubs très dirigées.

Facebook me permet de montrer mon travail à des personnes qui sont aux antipodes. Des gens que je ne rencontrerai sûrement jamais. Dis comme ça, ça semble un argument massue. Pourquoi se priver de ce formidable outil ? Je ne suis pas prêt à accepter n’importe quoi pour partager avec le plus grand nombre mes photos. Ma réponse a été de créer mon site internet et mon Blog. C’est mon espace où je montre réellement mon travail sans un quelconque algorithme qui filtrerait mes publications. Il n’y a rien d’autre que de la photographie sur mon site et sans aucune pub bien sûr. Les gens qui viennent sur mon site c’est rarement le fruit du hasard. Si ils m’ont trouvé sur Google, c’est avec des mots clés comme : Street Photography, Aix-en-Provence, Ricoh, Fuji …

Depuis un peu plus d’un an, j’ai testé Instagram. Même si ça reste du Réseau Social, je le préfère de loin à Facebook. C’est une plateforme très impersonnelle avec très peu d’interaction. Je n’ai dans mon feed que des photos car on ne peut partager que des photos. Il y a de la pub aussi, mais elle est bien moins présente que sur Facebook. Je regrette le fait qu’on ne puisse pas regarder une photo Full Screen. C’est assez dommage pour une plateforme pensée pour la photo.

Ça fait bientôt 3 ans que je fais de la Street Photography. La chose la plus importante que j’ai pu faire, c’est la création de ce site. Ce n’est pas une démarche chargée d’ego de posséder son propre site internet. Ce site est mon journal photographique. Ceux qui me suivent depuis mes débuts ont vu au travers de mes Blogs, mes tâtonnements, mes questionnements, mes coups de gueule et aussi surtout l’évolution de mon travail. Je ne fais pas de photos pour plaire au plus grand nombre. Je connais parfaitement les recettes pour faire des photos qui ont ce petit côté Waouh qui vont amasser des likes à la pelle. Mais ce qui m’intéresse vraiment, c’est de faire des photos qui me plaisent à moi et non pas aux autres.

Malgré tout ce que j’ai pu dire dans ce Blog, je reste une Social Media Bitch. Je devrai effacer mes comptes Facebook et Instagram. Mais je ne le fais pas. J’ai déjà pris conscience de certaines choses, mais je n’ose pas encore faire ce dernier pas. Ça viendra sûrement un jour. J’ai déjà grandement diminué mon temps passé sur ces plateformes. Est ce que ça a eu un impact sur mon travail dans la rue ? Pas vraiment. Je ne fais de photos pour les autres, mais pour moi. Ce que je montre sur les Réseaux Sociaux n’est qu’une infime partie de mon travail. Je montre beaucoup plus de photos dans un Blog que lors de plusieurs mois de partage photo sur Instagram !

Social Media Bitch !

It’s been over a month since I shared anything on Instagram except for a few stories. It’s the same for Facebook that I attend less and less. In my feed I have an incalculable number of  bullshit shared or else adds … I even thought to erase my Facebook page, but I decided to keep it to stay in touch with some people. That’s where all these platforms are good. Even if we find them lame, we still stay on. I wanted to call this Blog Social Media Slave, but I found it more powerful to call it Social Media Bitch. I’m in danger of getting attacked by an army of feminists. Fortunately, my blogs are quite confidential !

For several weeks France has been shaken by a phenomenon born on Social Networks : The famous Yellow Vests (Gilets jaunes). Since then, the country is shaken by demonstrations and blockages that paralyze the country. I will not speak more about these events. What annoys me the most is the crap of bullshit conveyed by social media for several days. So loose : France has no constitution since January 2017 (sigh) … France will pass under UN administration (sigh again) … People share without filters, regardless of whether it is true or not . We come to bullshit relayed by thousands of people who believe it hard. I’m not going to turn this Blog into a political forum, but I just want to point out that Social Media have a primary role in spreading fake information. So yes I’m tired of these barroom chat 2.0.

Feed the Beast, Be my Social Media Bitch !

That’s not really why I joined Facebook in late 2016. I just wanted to share my photos with the community. I quickly realized that Facebook was just a way to put yourself forward. A rather powerful self-promotion tool, all adorned with ads offered by our dear Mark. For several months, I stopped sharing photos on Facebook. I posted only Blogs. But the algorithm concocted by Facebook is very clever. You do not play the game by feeding the beast of regular posts, do not even hope to appear in the feed of your followers ! I was a little fed up to participate in this circus. Not want to share drowned pictures in the middle of ads, publications that had nothing to do with photography. Who is the big winner in this business ? Photographers who feel that their work has visibility ? Do not be mistaken … The real winner is Zuckerberg’s Gang, which amasses millions while polluting us with highly directed ads.

Facebook allows me to show my work to people who are poles apart. People I will never meet. Say like that, it seems like a big argument. Why deprive yourself of this great tool ? I am not ready to accept anything to share my photos with as many people as possible. My answer was to create my website and my blog. This is my space where I actually show my work without any algorithm that would filter my publications. There is nothing but photography on my site and no ads of course. People who come to my site is rarely a coincidence. If they found me on Google, it’s with keywords like : Street Photography, Aix-en-Provence, Ricoh, Fuji …

For a little over a year, I tested Instagram. Even if it’s still Social Media, I prefer it by far to Facebook. It’s a very impersonal platform with very little interaction. I only have photos in my feed because we can only share photos. There is advertising too, but it is much less present than on Facebook. I regret that we can not watch a photo Full Screen . It’s a shame for a platform dedicated to the photo.

I’ve been doing street photography for almost 3 years now. The most important thing I’ve done so far was to create this site. This is not an ego-driven approach to owning your own website. This site is my photographic journal. Those who follow me since my debut have seen through my Blogs, my trial and error, my questions, my rants and also especially the evolution of my work. I do not take pictures to please the greatest number. I know perfectly the recipes to make photos that have this Wow effect that will be a “like” machine. But what really interests me is to make photos that will please myself and not the others.

Despite all that I could say in this Blog, I remain a Social Media Bitch. I will have to delete my Facebook and Instagram accounts. But I do not do it. I have already realized some things, but I do not dare to take this last step yet. It will surely come one day. I have already greatly reduced my time spent on these platforms. Has it had an impact on my work on the street ? Not really. I don’t take photos for others, but for me. What I show on Social Networks is only a small part of my work. I show many more photos in a blog than during several months of photo sharing on Instagram !

Deuxième coup de gueule en deux semaines. Revenons un peu en arrière pour que vous puissiez comprendre ce Blog. Vous pouvez aller ici pour savoir de quoi il s’agit, mais pour les flemmards, je vais récapituler un peu les choses. Fisheye le Mag et Pentax/Ricoh ont lancé il y a 15 jours un concours Instagram visant à récompenser la meilleure photo de rue taggée bien sûr avec les #concoursricohgr #ricoh #ricohgr . Pentax allait même jusqu’à dire qu’éventuellement il y avait la possibilité de devenir Ambassadeur de leur marque… Rien que ça. 

J’avais fustigé dans mon Blog, l’attitude de Pentax et j’avais refusé de participer à un tel cirque. J’avais même reçu un commentaire du Community Manager de Pentax.fr qui avait voulu éclaircir certains points. 

• Le fait de pouvoir devenir Ambassadeur après un “pauvre” concours Instagram.
• Le fait que les Ambassadeurs Ricoh désignés pour départager les photos du concours n’avaient qu’un mandat de 15 jours (!!!)
• Le signal qu’ils envoyaient aux utilisateurs d’un Ricoh GR quand ils voyaient que n’importe qui (Canon, Nikon, Leica, Fuji, Olympus …) pouvait participer à ce concours en taggant juste sa photo avec les hashatgs ricoh, ricohgr et concoursricohgr.

Je vous joint la réponse pour que vous puissiez vous faire une idée de leur philosophie et de leur démarche. Personnellement ça ne m’a pas convaincu …

Je suis Arnaud, Community Manager pour la marque Ricoh / Pentax. En premier lieu, nous tenions à vous remercier de nous avoir fait part de votre sentiment sur notre jeu concours lancé en partenariat avec le magazine Fisheye.
Si notre démarche vous semble maladroite et inappropriée, nous en sommes désolés. Il y a une incompréhension des termes du concours et sur notre rapport aux ambassadeurs de la marque.

Notre objectif, en préparant ce concours, était double : remettre sur le devant de la scène le Ricoh GR et détecter de nouveaux talents qui pourraient devenir des ambassadeurs de notre marque.
Le concours vise donc à identifier et soutenir de nouveaux talents dans la perspective de l’arrivée du Ricoh GR III. Nous souhaitons faire découvrir l’univers Ricoh GR au plus grand nombre de photographes. L’idée n’est pas nécessairement de recruter un utilisateur de la marque Ricoh GR — si c’est le cas, c’est aussi très bien — mais surtout de récompenser un talent de la street photo et de lui proposer de découvrir l’univers GR dans la perspective qu’il soit séduit par les nombreux atouts de ce compact expert.

En réalité, les trois photographes qui portent le concours sont des nouveaux ambassadeurs avec qui nous aurons le plaisir de collaborer sur le long terme, au-delà de la date butoir du 23 octobre. Nous les avons identifiés pour leur talent dans la street photo et parce qu’ils utilisent des appareils Ricoh GR.

Dans l’espoir que cette réponse apporte l’éclaircissement nécessaire, je vous souhaite une belle journée et je vous dis à bientôt sur les réseaux sociaux de Ricoh Pentax !

Ce matin, un ami me fait passer le lien du résultat du concours initié par Fisheye et Pentax/Ricoh. J’avais hâte de voir le résultat car même si je ne cautionne pas la démarche, je voulais voir le résultat. J’étais allé sur la page Instagram dédiée au concours et j’avais vu quelques belles photos (ici) . Autant vous dire que c’est la douche froide ! J’ai même cru que c’était une blague de mon pote et qu’il m’avait refourgué un faux lien. Mais non ! C’est bien le site de Fisheye le Mag et c’est bien le résultat du concours ! Je vous laisse aller consulter leur site pour voir les photos qui ont retenu leur attention. 

Je sais que je vais encore passer pour le hater de base, le gars qui râle tout le temps, qui critique tout, mais franchement Fisheye et Pentax vous n’avez pas honte de votre palmarès ? C’est ça votre vision de la Street Photography ? Du pauvre Light/Shadow insipide sans âme. Du Fishing de base, une photo type billboard amusante mais mille fois trop vue … Si vous n’avez pas honte de ça, eh bien moi j’ai honte pour vous. Je suis surtout en colère car le message que vous envoyez au plus grand nombre c’est que la Street Photography c’est ça. Et là “j’ai mal à mon Ricoh” comme me l’a soufflé un ami. 

J’aimerai avoir le retour des fameux “Ambasseur en CDD de deux semaines” pour avoir leur avis sur cette sélection. Ont ils vraiment choisi ces photos parmi les plus de 2800 photos postées pour le concours ? Si c’est le cas, ils ne méritent pas mieux qu’un CDD de deux semaines. Pour deux raisons … La première est que si ils ont réellement choisi ces photos, c’est qu’ils ne méritent pas plus qu’un CDD de deux semaines tant le palmarès est risible. La deuxième raison est que si ils ont subi cette sélection, ils devraient être content de ne plus avoir cette étiquette collée à leur nom tant elle représente un fardeau.

J’ai volontairement collé dans ce Blog une sélection de photos qui pourrait plaire à Pentax et Fisheye. On se dit WOW c’est beau, mais au final c’est vide, mais apparemment ça plaît aux gens. Si la Street Photography se résumait à ça, je l’aurai arrêté depuis longtemps. Je continue de temps en temps à tomber dans la facilité et à faire ce genre de photos, mais je n’aime pas ça. Ces photos ont un petit côté Waouh, mais elles sont terriblement ennuyeuses. Ok il en faut pour tout le monde et je n’ai aucune prétention d’imposer ce qui me plaît aux autres. Mais quand le résultat d’un concours se résume à ce type de photo, ça me fait mal au cul …

Shame on you Fisheye & Pentax/Ricoh.

Second rant in two weeks. Let’s go back a bit so that you can understand this blog. You can go here to find out what it is, but for the lazy ones, I’ll recap a little bit. Fisheye  and Pentax / Ricoh launched 15 days ago an Instagram contest to reward the best street photo tagged of course with #concoursricohgr #ricoh #ricohgr. Pentax went so far as to say that eventually there was the possibility of becoming an ambassador for their brand … just that.

I had lambasted in my Blog, the attitude of Pentax and I refused to participate in such a circus. I even received a comment from the Community Manager of Pentax.fr who wanted to clarify some points.

• Being able to become an ambassador after a “lame” Instagram contest.
• The fact that the Ricoh Ambassadors designated to curate the contest had a mandate of only 15 days (!!!)
• The signal they sent to users of a Ricoh GR when they saw that anyone (Canon, Nikon, Leica, Fuji, Olympus …) could participate in this contest by just tagging their photo with hashatgs ricoh, ricohgr and concoursricohgr.

I enclose the answer so that you can get an idea of their philosophy and their approach. Personally that did not convince me …

If our approach seems clumsy and inappropriate, we are sorry. There is a misunderstanding of the terms of the contest and our report to the brand’s ambassadors.

Our goal in preparing this competition was twofold: to put the Ricoh GR back on the scene and to spot new talent that could become ambassadors of our brand.
The competition aims to identify and support new talent in view of the arrival of the Ricoh GR III. We want to introduce the Ricoh GR universe to the largest number of photographers. The idea is not necessarily to recruit a user Ricoh GR brand – if that’s the case, it’s also very good – but above all to reward a talent for street photography and offer him to discover the GR universe in the perspective that it is seduced by the many assets of this compact expert.

In fact, the three photographers who are taking part in the competition are new ambassadors with whom we will have the pleasure of collaborating in the long term, beyond the deadline of October 23rd. We identified them for their street photo talent and because they use Ricoh GR cameras.

This morning, a friend passed me the link of the contest result initiated by Fisheye and Pentax / Ricoh. I was eager to see the result because even if I do not endorse the process, I wanted to see the result. I already went on the Instagram page dedicated to the contest and I saw some beautiful pictures. As much to tell you that it is the cold shower ! I even thought it was a joke of my friend and that he had reburged a false link. But no ! This is the site of Fisheye Mag and it is the result of the competition ! I let you go to their site to see the pictures that caught their attention.

I know I’m still going to go for the basic hater, the guy who keeps on ranting all the time, criticizing everything, but frankly Fisheye and Pentax are you not ashamed of the selection you’re presented ? Is that your vision of Street Photography ? Lame Light / Shadow without soul. Basic Fishing, a funny billboard photo but a thousand times already seen … If you’re not ashamed of that, well I’m ashamed for you. I am especially angry because the message you send to the greatest number is that Street Photography is that. And It’s a pain in my Ricoh !,  a friend has told me.

I would like to have the feedback of the so-called “Ambassador in fixed term of two weeks” to have their opinion on this selection. Did they really choose these photos from over 2800 photos posted for the contest ? If so, they deserve no better than a two-week short term contract. For two reasons … The first is that if they really chose these photos is that they do not deserve more than a two-week contract because the selection is poor and laughable. The second reason is that if they have undergone this selection, they should be happy to no longer have this label stuck to their name as it represents a burden.

I have voluntarily stuck in this Blog a selection of photos that could please Pentax and Fisheye. We think WOW it’s beautiful, but in the end it’s empty, but apparently it’s good for people. If Street Photography were all that, I would have stopped it for a long time. I continue from time to time to fall into the ease and to do this kind of photos, but I do not like that. These photos have a Wow effect, but they are terribly boring. Ok, we need it for everyone and I have no claim to impose what I like about others. But when the result of a contest comes down to this type of photo, it hurts my ass …

C’est un peu comme Qui veut veut gagner des millions ?. Oui c’est un peu ça. Pentax.fr en partenariat avec le très bon magazine Fisheye, vous propose un concours pour célébrer la sortie du Ricoh GR III en vous proposant comme lot, un Ricoh GR II et aussi la possibilité de devenir ambassadeur pour la marque Ricoh ! Elizabeth Char qui est une amie et aussi une adepte de ce petit boitier noir fait partie du Jury qui servira à départager les prétendants. Vous ne le savez peut être pas, mais j’aime beaucoup son travail et c’est aussi quelqu’un que j’apprécie tout particulièrement. Pour l’occasion, elle a été promue Ambassadrice Ricoh GR pour le temps de cette compétition qui se termine le 23 Octobre sur Instagram.

Pourquoi d’ailleurs, nommer des ambassadeurs de la marque que le temps du concours ? Je ne sais pas, mais dans ma tête, on nomme des Ambassadeurs pour une durée plus longue. Une année me semble le minimum. Là on parle de 2 semaines, ça ne rime à rien. N’allez pas croire que je rabaisse ce statut d’Ambassadeur de la marque, mais je trouve juste dommage vis à vis des photographes concernés que Pentax/Ricoh ne s’investisse pas plus en leur offrant un CDI voire un CDD à durée plus longue ! Je ne parle que d’Elizabeth car je ne connais pas les deux autres “Ambassadeurs”. Mais elle mériterait autre chose que d’être juste Ambassadeur_pour_2_semaines ! 

Ça ne vous semble pas bizarre cette façon de procéder ? Je ne parle pas d’un concours comme on en voit plein sur Instagram. Récompenser la meilleure photo lors d’un concours Street Photography avec du matériel photo, quoi de plus normal. Mais l’accroche “La possibilité de devenir Ambassadeur de la marque Ricoh”, là franchement je ne comprends pas … Quel est le lien entre un Concours photo et le fait d’être Ambassadeur de la marque ? Je suis allé voir un peu ce qui était posté sur le #concoursricohgr. Et là c’est c’est la douche froide ! Un nombre incalculable de photos postées et taggées #ricohgr #ricoh #concoursricohgr, mais même pas faites avec ce fameux Ricoh GR ! Alors je suis sûrement con mais je ne comprends pas … En fait si j’ai compris au bout d’un moment que rien dans les termes du concours ne mentionne que la photo doit avoir été prise avec un Ricoh GR . Ah ben je comprends mieux maintenant. En fait les gens participent à ce concours qu’avec l’idée de mettre la main sur un Ricoh GR II comme récompense.

Mais là où Ricoh et FishEye se plantent lamentablement, c’est qu’ils risquent de se retrouver à la fin du concours avec un Ambassadeur Ricoh qui fera lui ses photos avec un Leica, Fuji, Sony, Nikon, Canon ou autre marque ! C’est un non sens complet. J’avais dans l’idée qu’un Ambassadeur d’une marque devait avoir un travail cohérent réalisé avec un appareil de la dite marque. Et sincèrement je ne pense pas qu’un concours permette de trouver ces personnes. Vous allez attirer lors de ces concours que des personnes qui n’ont qu’un idée : mettre la main sur le prix qui récompensera la meilleure photo.

Franchement Ricoh, si vous cherchez des Ambassadeurs, cherchez un peu mieux. Allez sur #ricohgr  ou encore #ricohgrd … et regardez un peu le travail de très nombreux photographes qui utilisent cet appareil. Vous découvrirez sûrement de très bons photographes qui seraient à même de devenir éventuellement des Ambassadeurs de votre marque. Alors est ce que je vais participer à ce concours ? Sûrement pas. Je ne cautionne pas la démarche et j’ai récemment acheté un Ricoh GR d’occase qui n’a rien à envier à un Ricoh GR II. J’attends juste de voir qui sera l’Ambassadeur de la marque ! Moi je vote Elizabeth Char, même si elle n’a pas le droit de participer !

Who wants to be a Ricoh Ambassador ?

It’s a bit like Who wants to be a Millionnaire ? Yes. Kind of. Pentax.fr in partnership with the very good magazine Fisheye, are putting out a contest to celebrate the release of the Ricoh GR III by offering you as a reward, a Ricoh GR II and also the opportunity to become an Ambassador for the brand Ricoh ! Elizabeth Char who is a friend and also an enthusiast of this little black camera is part of the Jury which will be used to decide the contenders. You may not know it, but I love her work and she’s also someone I really enjoy. For the occasion, she was promoted Ricoh GR Ambassador for the time of this competition which ends on October 23rd on Instagram.

Why, by the way, assign Ambassadors of the brand only for the time of the competition ? I do not know, but in my head, we are called Ambassadors for a longer period. A year seems to me the minimum. There is talk of 2 weeks, it does not mean anything. Do not believe that I belittle the status of Ambassador of the brand, but I find just a pity vis-à-vis the photographers concerned that Pentax/Ricoh does not invest more by offering them a permanent contract or even a longer fixed-term contract ! I am only talking about Elizabeth because I do not know the two other “Ambassadors”. But she deserves more than just being Ambassador_for_2_weeks !

It does not seem strange to you this way of proceeding ? I’m not talking about a contest like we see a lot on Instagram. Reward the best photo in a Street Photography contest with photo gear, what’s more normal. But the catchphrase “The opportunity to become an Ambassador of the brand Ricoh”, there frankly I do not understand … What is the link between a photo contest and being Ambassador of the brand ? I went to see what was shared on the #concoursricohgr. And here it is the cold shower ! Countless photos posted and tagged #ricohgr #ricoh #concoursricohgr, but not even made with this famous Ricoh GR ! So I’m probably stupid but I do not understand … In fact if I understood after a while that nothing in the terms of the contest does not mention that the photo must have been taken with a Ricoh GR. Ah well I understand better now. In fact people are participating in this contest only with the idea of ​​getting their hands on a Ricoh GR II as a reward.

But where Ricoh and Fisheye fail miserably is that they may end up with a Ricoh Ambassador who will do his photos with a Leica, Fuji, Sony, Nikon, Canon or other brand ! It is a complete nonsense. I had the idea that an Ambassador of a brand had to have a coherent work done with a camera of the said mark. And sincerely I do not think a competition can find these people. You will attract in these competitions only people who have only one idea : put their hands on the prize that will reward the best photo.

Frankly Ricoh, if you’re looking for Ambassadors, look a little better. Go to #ricohgr or #ricohgrd … and take a look at the work of many photographers who use this camera. You will surely discover very good and legitimate photographers who would be able to eventually become Ambassadors of your brand. So am I going to participate in this contest ? Surely not. I do not endorse the approach and I recently bought a used Ricoh GR that has nothing to envy a Ricoh GR II. I’m just waiting to see who will be the Brand Ambassador ! I vote Elizabeth Char, even if she does not have the right to participate !
