July 2025 Highlights

I knew that July would be a fairly quiet month in terms of photography. Fewer opportunities despite the children being on holiday. And indeed, that proved to be the case. Nevertheless, as I try to make a point of sharing with you the few photos taken during this month, here they are. In terms of quality and quantity, it’s very light!

This morning, I was on my way to the gym, which is located behind a Tamil temple. Surprisingly, there were a lot of cars parked around the temple. I thought to myself that I would take a look once I had finished my workout… So, mid-morning, there I was in front of this scene. Nothing was premeditated. As they say in street photography, you have to be street wise. You have to be attentive to all the little changes or insignificant things that happen on the street. You can anticipate certain things or simply be there at the right moment. I could say that I was lucky to be there. But the street had given me clues about a possible demonstration in the area. Of course, what interested me in this scene were the gestures.

Change of scenery here. We went to spend a few days in Hell-Bourg, a beautiful little village in the Cirque de Salazie. We had planned to go for a few walks, but that was without taking into account the weather, which poured down on us. I told you that until now, I hadn’t taken many night-time photos. Recently, I’ve been trying it out a bit because I like the atmosphere it creates. Here, I find the silhouettes very enigmatic and I’m more interested in the atmosphere of the photo than any other criteria (composition, sharpness, etc.).

Another photo taken in Salazie. We were there for the long weekend of 14th of July and so we attended the national holiday parade. It was quite amusing to see all the buses chartered by the town hall so that elderly people could come to the ceremony. What interested me here were the reflections of the flags on the buses.

Back to some street work! Still experimenting at night. It’s clearly not great, but I’m trying to understand how to photograph at night. I think there are several approaches, and I’m leaning more towards capturing an atmosphere, a mood. I don’t really care about the details or sharpness. Well, I’m still a long way from having anything consistent, but I’m starting to get a feel for certain things.

A photo that would have been more interesting from my point of view without the people on the left side. But it was taken on the fly while walking. As is often the case, I caught a glimpse of the woman’s gestures out of the corner of my eye, and that’s what made me click instinctively, almost without thinking.

A place that children love, and you can guess why! It’s winter here on Reunion Island, and the river water is still pretty cold. But not cold enough to stop them from doing what all kids love to do: jumping off the rocks. I could make an album with just photos taken at this spot over the years we’ve spent here.

That’s all for July. Six photos. You’ll have to make do with that. August will be different because school starts tomorrow and I’ll have a little more opportunity to hang out in Saint-Denis.

All photos were taken with the Ricoh GR3 | Crop 35mm

  1. Nightmare photography I call it. Never quite get it right at night. Plus with my rangefinder you can’t see clearly to focus if there’s no light coming in the viewfinder. You nailed it though, especially the first example. If you consider the night and all that darkness then everything is slightly out of focus and not only that the details become vague and sparse. No surprise that people often claim to see weird things at night. Switch a light on and they disappear. Your black and white choice conveys the mood and ambiguity of night perfectly.

    1. Nightmare Photography. You nailed and named it ! That’s where my LCD screen helps me to vaguely see what is happening in front of me. I also like the slow shutter speed that offers some ghosts or light effects. I guess that Night Photography is easier in big cities whith all the urban light. I experienced that while shooting in Bangkok. Definitely I prefer shooting during daylight as far as I’m concern …

  2. Hey, Jeff! Love the night shots and the ghostly effects. Night photography more of a winter thing for me … It gets dark earlier, and I often find the sun has already gone done before I’m ready to carve out a bit of photography time. I’m not very good at it, but new challenges keep us on our toes I suppose …
