A delightful nightmare for a (street) photographer

This is the second time I have attended Dipavali in Saint-André. This town is located just 30 minutes from Saint-Denis and has a large Tamil community. Dipavali is the Festival of Lights and is undoubtedly the biggest festival in the town, taking place every year in November. Last year, I went to Holi and started writing a blog post that I never finished. This year, we went as a family and some friends joined us. The kids didn’t want to take part in the festivities, though, and sat in a shady corner playing on their phones…

September 2025 Highlights

You might say that my blogs about my ‘highlights’ are coming thick and fast. Well, not that fast, considering there’s only one per month! The thing is, I don’t write much in between these blogs, which are basically a recap of what I’ve been up to over the past month. Which says a lot about my lack of inspiration when it comes to finding an interesting topic for a blog. In fact, my last three blogs were the ‘highlights’ of July, August and September! Not only do I struggle to write, but as you’ll see after reading this blog, I also struggle to take photos!

In the golden pit

This weekend was the Francofolies festival. I can’t remember the last time I went to a concert. What is certain is that it was before 2019, when we moved to Reunion Island. When I was younger, I was always on the lookout for dates for my favourite bands and artists, and I went to countless concerts. I didn’t hesitate to travel long distances sometimes. I think my biggest trip was taking the TGV from my province to Paris to see Sufjan Stevens. When you love something…

Going Wild

When I was younger, I have no memories of my parents taking my sister and me to the beach. However, in the photo albums, I found a picture of myself at the age of two sitting on the bonnet of the car with my bottle, as if I wasn’t allowed to touch the sand… My parents don’t like the sea and, like most people of their generation in Réunion, they consider it dangerous and prefer to stay away from it. On the other hand, I have lots of memories of my parents taking us hiking in the mountains! That probably explains why, even today, I prefer hiking to roasting in the sun on a beach. Gwen and the children, on the other hand, love going to the beach.

June 2025 Highlights

Given my chronic lack of inspiration to write a Blog, I’ve decided to share with you the photos I consider the most interesting from the previous month. A few years ago, I also did this in the form of a slideshow. At the moment, I don’t think I have enough photos to put together a slideshow … I’m going to try to be regular over the next few months to keep this monthly rendez-vous going. So let’s start with June, which saw me take very few photos. I was saved by an outing to the Grand Boucan, the annual mega-carnival that attracts a lot of people.

Reigniting my Street Photography

Since I came back from Vietnam, almost 3 months ago, I haven’t been very assiduous about street photography. I’ve had a lot of things to sort out and taking photos wasn’t really high on my list of priorities. As is often the case, the less I do, the less I want to do. Didn’t I miss it? Yes, a little, but as on my trip to Thailand, Vietnam was such a photographic orgy that I was still full of it, even weeks after our return to Reunion Island. I’ve only shown you a tiny part of what I did there. Between the purely street photos and the ‘family’ photos, I really photographed until I was sick of it. Which probably explains the diet I subconsciously imposed on myself when I got home.

Make your own luck

OMG, a second article written so quickly! Don’t get carried away, I’m about to fall back into my usual torpor and I’ll spare you my mindless posts … The thing is, following a brief exchange with John on my previous Blog, I had the idea of writing something.

A glimpse of Vietnam

1500 photos. That’s roughly the number of photos I brought back from my recent trip to Vietnam. It’s just enormous. I’m talking about the photos I processed in Lightroom. As for the number of photos I took there, multiply that figure by 5. Yes, you’re not dreaming, I must have clicked the shutter more than 7,000 times. In just one trip, my Ricoh GR3 got a bit old …

Good Morning … Reunion !

I know you’ve probably been waiting to see the photos I took in Vietnam during our recent trip, but I thought it would be a good idea to start 2025 with a few photos of the streets of Saint-Denis, where most of my work is done. It’s not even a week since we landed after a journey of almost 24 hours through the airports of ConDao, Saigon and Bangkok. I’ll come back later on to this trip, which went beyond my expectations. Not only in terms of the places we visited, but also photographically speaking.

Last Blog of 2024

We’re in the middle of preparations, not for New Year’s Eve 2024, but for our imminent departure for Vietnam! On the evening of the 1st, we head for Bangkok before catching a connecting flight to Saigon. The journey will be a little long, as we’ll be in transit in Bangkok for almost 9 hours… You know when you’re looking for the cheapest plane tickets possible, you’re prepared to put up with lousy waiting times to make a few hundred euros. That was back in May when I bought the tickets that cost us over €5500 (!!!). Today I’m thinking that I should have dropped the extra €200 or so to avoid having to wait 9 hours in Bangkok. A lesson to remember for next time…
