Aujourd’hui, profitant du beau temps, petite séance Street Photography avec mon nouveau Ricoh GR IV dans les rues d’Aix-en-Provence. Mes premières micro-sorties à Montpellier m’avaient laissées sur ma faim. Je suis donc descendu sur Aix avec mon appareil et deux batteries en poche. L’occasion aussi de tester l’autonomie du Ricoh. En tout cas une chose est sûre, c’est trop bien de se balader sans sac ! ;).

L’appareil est vraiment poids plume et je l’ai gardé tout le temps à la main. Je ne savais pas vraiment où j’allais pour faire des photos. En fait, je me laissais juste guider par la lumière. Comme Aix est une ville avec des ruelles assez étroites et des bâtiments de plusieurs étages, il faut être à l’affût des rayons de lumière.

D’ailleurs, je devais constamment modifier les réglages de mon appareil en fonction des situations. Chose dont je n’avais pas l’habitude avec mon Fuji XE2 (qui est bien meilleur en basse lumière). En gros, quand il y avait beaucoup de lumière, je devais sélectionner une petite ouverture  (f5.6 voire f8), une valeur d’ISO basse (ISO 100) et je sous-exposais de ~ -1.7 EV.

Dès que je passais dans des zones d’ombre, je sélectionnais une grande ouverture (f1.9 ou f2.8) et je poussais les ISO jusqu’à 400 pour avoir une vitesse acceptable (supérieure à 1/500s).

En tout et pour tout, j’aurais passé 5 heures à arpenter les rues d’Aix-en-Provence avant de tomber en rade de batterie… Bon, c’est vrai que j’ai tendance à solliciter l’écran LCD pour regarder les photos. Je pense qu’avec 3 batteries, je pourrai tenir une journée ! Bilan de la sortie ? Eh bien, j’aime beaucoup le Ricoh GR IV, il est silencieux (leaf shutter), très discret (il est petit et tout noir). Les gens ne font même pas attention à moi. J’ai vraiment l’air d’un touriste avec cet appareil. La lumière étant magnifique, j’ai essayé d’inclure des silhouettes dans mes compositions.

Je me suis aussi amusé à faire des photos au plus près des gens en me postant à des endroits clés et en attendant qu’ils passent devant mon objectif.

Le résultat est pas mal, mais encore loin des photos de Michael Kowalczyk que j’ai découvert récemment. Allez voir ses photos et vous verrez ce que c’est de shooter à – de 50 cms des gens !

Street Photography walk in Aix-en-Provence | Ricoh GR IV.

Today was a sunny day, so I went for a Street Photography walk with my new Ricoh GR IV in the streets of Aix-en-Provence. My first sessions in Montpellier had left me unsatisfied. So I went down to Aix-en-Provence with the camera in my pocket with 2 batteries. The opportunity also to test the autonomy of the Ricoh. One thing is sure, it’s so good to walk without a camera bag! ;).

The Ricoh is really lightweight and I kept it all the time at hand. I did not really know where I was going to take photographs.In fact I just let myself be guided by the light. As Aix is a city with rather narrow streets with buildings of several floors, we have to lookout  for rays of light.

Besides, I had to constantly change the settings of my camera according to the situation. Something I have not been accustomed with my Fuji XE2 (which is much better in low light). Basically when there was lots of light, I had to select a small aperture (f5.6 or f8), a low ISO (ISO 100) and I was underexposing of ~ -1.7 EV.

As soon as I walked in the shadows, I had to select a large aperture (f1.9 or f2.8) and I pushed the ISO up to 400 for an acceptable speed (greater than 1 / 500s).

All in all I spent 5 hours walking in the streets of Aix-en-Provence before running out of battery … It’s true that I tend to chimp a lot. I think that with 3 batteries, I can make the whole day ! Assessment of the day ? Well I like the Ricoh GR IV, it’s silent (leaf shutter), very discreet (it’s small and all black). People do not even notice me. I really look like a tourist with this camera. As the light was gorgeous, I tried to add silhouettes to my captures.

I also had fun taking pictures very close to the people by standing at some key spots waiting for them to enter the frame.

The result is not that bad, but still far from captures of Michael Kowalczyk, a Streettog based in NY, I discovered recently. Come see his photographs and see how close he can get !
