Je voulais rédiger ce petit article suite à la future publication du livre World Street Photography 4. Hier a été dévoilée la liste des photos qui seront publiées dans le volume 4 de WSP. Ces photos ont été choisies par des “curators”. Ce terme est assez difficile à traduire en français. En anglais, on parle de “museum curator” (conservateur de musée). Mais ici en photographie, le “curator” est celui qui donne son avis sur un panel de photos. Ce sont souvent des photographes ou artistes déjà reconnus.

Kujaja, qui est derrière la publication du livre annuel WSP a nommé 8 curators qui ont choisi leurs photos préférées en votant pour elles. Les photos qui ont recueilli le plus de voix font partie du livre. Aussi simple que ça. Vu le nombre de photos proposées (1800), les heureux élus ne sont pas si nombreux (160 photographes différents pour 200 photos). J’ai personnellement une photo de sélectionnée.

C’est une grande joie d’être en compagnie de photographes dont j’admire le travail. Parmi eux, Vasco Trancoso, Steven Jensen, Sam Rodgers, Rudy Boyer, Paulo Abrantes, Saman Ali, Tim Huynh, Jeffrey De Keyzer, Youngjae Lim, Helmut Ph Kluge… Je tiens d’ailleurs à féliciter tous les photographes qui seront dans le livre. J’ai une pensée toute particulière pour ceux qui ne sont pas dans la sélection. Le travail des curators est très subjectif. Même si Kujaja a choisi 8 curators, ça reste subjectif. Comme je l’ai dit dans le titre de cet article, “It’s all about curator’s taste !”.

De nos jours le web est inondé de photos. Ces photos ont été publiées sur un grand nombre de plateformes comme Instagram, les Groupes Facebook, 500px, des plateformes de partage comme WSP… A moins d’être déconnecté de tous ces réseaux, je pense qu’il est impossible de ne pas être tombé à un moment ou un autre sur certaines de ces photos. En tout cas, c’est une belle sélection et j’ai hâte de voir le rendu final en feuilletant le livre.

Concernant ma photo choisie, dans un précédent post “Compose the picture Sammy and wait !”, j’ai un peu expliqué comment je l’ai faite. Cette photo a été réalisée en Juin 2016. Je commençais tout juste la Street Photography. J’avais repéré un spot intéressant en voiture et je m’étais garé pour aller vers cet endroit. C’est ainsi que je suis passé par hasard sous ce pont en y allant. Mon regard a tout de suite été attiré par ces formes géométriques que m’offrait la lumière matinale. Le reste n’est que composition. Cette photo fait partie de mes 12 photos qui devaient passer entre les mains des curators. Est ce ma préférée ? Je vais être franc. Non ! Si je devais choisir parmi les 12 qui avaient été sélectionnées, j’aurais pris celle là.

World Street Photography 4 sera disponible à partir du 20 Juillet 2017 au prix de 40€. Le même jour aura lieu le vernissage de l’exhibition à Hambourg. It’s all about Curator’s taste !

I wanted to write this small article following the forthcoming publication of the photobook World Street Photography 4. Yesterday was released the list of photos that will be published in volume 4 of WSP. These photos were chosen by “curators”. This term is quite difficult to translate into French. In english, we speak of “museum curator”. But here in photography, the “curator” is the one who chooses the best photos in a selection. They are often already recognized photographers or artists.

Kujaja, who is behind the publication of the annual book WSP has named 8 curators who have chosen their favorite photos by voting for them. The photos that collected the most votes are part of the book. As simple as that. Given the number of photos available (1800), the lucky ones are not so numerous (160 different photographers for 200 photos). I personally have a photo in the selection.

It is a great joy to be with photographers whose work I admire. Among them, Vasco Trancoso, Steven Jensen, Sam Rodgers, Rudy Boyer, Paulo Abrantes, Saman Ali, Tim Huynh, Jeffrey De Keyzer, Youngjae Lim, Helmut Ph Kluge … I would like to congratulate all the photographers who will be in the book. I have a special thought for those who are not in the selection. The work of curators is very subjective. Even if Kujaja has chosen 8 curators, it remains subjective. As I said in the title of this article, “It’s all about curator’s taste!”.

Nowadays the web is flooded with photos. These photos have been published on a large number of platforms like Instagram, Facebook Groups, 500px, sharing platforms like WSP … Unless you are disconnected from all these networks, I think it is impossible not to have ran accross some of these photos. In any case, it’s a nice selection and I can’t wait to put my hands on the book.

Regarding my photo chosen, in a previous post “Compose the picture Sammy and wait!“, I explained how I made it. This photo was taken in June 2016. I was just starting Street Photography. I spotted an interesting spot in the car and I parked to go to this place. That is how I happened to pass under this bridge by going there. My attention was immediately drawn to these geometric shapes offered by the morning light. The rest is only composition. This photo is part of my 12 photos that were to pass in the hands of curators. Is this my favorite? Frankly, no ! If I had to choose from the 12 that had been selected, I would have taken that one.

World Street Photography 4 will be available from 20 July 2017 at the price of 40 €. On the same day, the exhibition will open in Hamburg. All profits will be entirely donated to the association Ashalayam. You can book and buy your copy here.
