J’ai passé les six dernières années à faire quasi exclusivement des photos de mes enfants. En fait depuis la naissance de Joachim, l’aîné de la fratrie. Puis bien sûr j’ai continué quand Ronan, le petit frère a déboulé dans notre vie.
Depuis le début de cette année et ma découverte de la Street Photography, inconsciemment ma façon de photographier mes enfants et mes proches a changé.
Le fait d’avoir aussi abandonné le zoom (j’avais jusqu’à présent un 18-105 mm) pour une focale fixe (le 18 mm), a modifié ma façon d’appréhender les choses.
J’ai dû changer mes habitudes et me suis mis à utiliser des cadrages plus audacieux.
Quand je regarde mes photos de vacances de l’été dernier, je me rends compte qu’elles sont très différentes de ce que je faisais auparavant. J’essaye dorénavant de faire des photos moins posées en utilisant ce que j’ai appris en Street Photography.
Ça déroute un peu mes parents (notamment le N&B), mais ça me plaît de documenter de la sorte la vie de ma petite famille.
Et vous ? La Street Photography a t-elle aussi changé votre façon de photographier vos proches ?

Photograph the Loved Ones.
I spent the last six years doing almost exclusively pictures of my children. In fact since the birth of Joachim, the eldest sibling. Then of course I continued when Ronan, the little brother broke into our lives.
Since the beginning of this year and my discovery of Street Photography, subconsciously my way of photographing my children and loved ones has changed.
Giving up the zoom (I had until now an 18 – 105 mm) for a prime lens (the 18 mm), changed my way of seeing things.
I had to change my habits and started using more daring framings.
When I look back at my holiday photographs of last summer, I realize that they are very different from what I used to do. I try to capture candid moments using what I’ve learnt in Street Photography.
It’s a bit confusing for my parents (especially the B&W editing), but I like the way I’m now documenting the life of my family.
And you ? How Street Photography has changed your way of capturing the great moments with your loved ones ?

Family Portraiture and Street Photography are very similar. Not that studio nonsense that we see with those white backgrounds and uncomfortable posed faces that everyone seems to want, but candid moments. Moments, that are spontaneous as you have displayed here will far outlast any other images. I was looking through some of my wedding shoots recently and it is blatantly obvious (to me anyway) which are the best shots, the unguarded natural ones far outshine the formals. Great job Jeff.
Hi John, believe me or not, you’re the one that inspired me for this article. We had this little chat about documenting one’s family on 500px. And I really love how you capture the soul of your loved ones in your photographs. I saw your pictures of the little girls messing up in the bedroom during a wedding shooting, and I must say that capturing these moments is pricesless. I try as you said to capture candid moments or sometimes cheating a little by provoking a reaction of my kids.
