Je vis dans une des régions les plus ensoleillées de France, près de 300 jours de soleil par an ! Même en hiver, la lumière est superbe. D’ailleurs jusqu’à fin décembre, les températures ont été très clémentes.

Passer la journée entière à arpenter les rues d’Aix-en-Provence appareil en main était un réel plaisir et il m’est même arrivé d’avoir chaud.

L’hiver, il fait froid…

L’hiver est arrivé brutalement avec les fêtes. On a continué à avoir de belles journées ensoleillées mais par contre le froid mordant vous glaçait jusqu’aux os ! L’hiver quoi…

Ma plus grosse erreur a été ne pas changer ma façon de m’habiller. Lors de certaines sorties Street Photo, il m’est arrivé de rentrer plus tôt à la maison car j’étais frigorifié. J’ai même pris froid juste avant Noël…

J’ai commencé la Street Photography en avril dernier, c’est donc mon premier hiver à arpenter les rues et ça pique ! J’ai dû changer mes habitudes vestimentaires et endosser ma grosse veste avec doublure, sortir mes gants et le bonnet pour la tête.

Moi qui aime me déplacer plutôt léger, c’est un changement radical. Je me sens engoncé dans mes habits, mais je n’ai plus froid ! Mon prochain objectif, acheter des mitaines car les gants c’est pas vraiment pratique avec un appareil photo.

D’ailleurs c’est en enlevant les gants pour répondre à un coup de fil que j’ai malencontreusement fait tomber mon Ricoh GRD IV d’une hauteur de plus de 1 mètre. Il a survécu ! Enfin pas de dégâts apparents…

Ciel gris.

Début janvier, le soleil s’est fait plus capricieux et les températures encore plus basses. J’avais réglé une fois pour toute le problème du froid, mais l’absence de soleil était plus embêtante.

Dans le Sud de la France, on est trop habitué au soleil. Si bien que je me suis dit que je devais attendre un bon jour (un jour ensoleillé) pour sortir faire des photos. C’est tellement plus simple de faire des photos avec le soleil. On joue avec les ombres, les contrastes, les couleurs sont éclatantes.

Je ne dis pas que le soleil suffit à faire de belles photos, mais c’est un élément important. Comme pas mal de gens, je travaille, j’ai des responsabilités de père, d’époux. Les seuls jours où j’avais la possibilité de sortir faire des photos, il ne faisait pas beau. Alors quoi ? J’attends le printemps ou je me bouge les fesses pour sortir même si le soleil a décidé de jouer à cache cache ?

Lumière diffuse.

Je me suis donc forcé à aller faire des photos même si il n’y avait pas de soleil. Et finalement c’est assez intéressant. On travaille différemment. On oublie les fort contrastes. On se concentre plus sur la composition et je dois dire que ce n’est pas mon truc. Je mets donc à profit ces jours sans soleil pour m’améliorer.

L’absence de soleil a un avantage. L’exposition est moins problématique avec mon Ricoh GRD IV. Je n’ai pas à modifier constamment mes réglages. Je me cale en mode A | f4 | ISO 400 | – 1 EV et j’ai  toujours une bonne vitesse (allant de 1/2000s à 1/350s suivant les conditions). Après ces dernières semaines à shooter en couleur, je suis revenu au monochrome.

Winter Fashion Week.

Ma compagne, une vraie fashionista, aime les saisons car ça lui permet de mettre des vêtements différents. C’est vrai que les gros manteaux à (fausse ou vraie) fourrure, les chapeaux sont très intéressants photographiquement. (Ma compagne tient à préciser que ce n’est pas elle sur la photo suivante ! )

Je suis à l’affût de ces personnes. Pas besoin de chercher bien loin ! Je me suis posté à un endroit avec un beau fond blanc et j’ai attendu que les gens viennent à moi.

L’hiver est là pour encore un petit moment. Le soleil reviendra bien avant le printemps. Finalement, je me suis rendu compte que je n’avais pas besoin de lui pour faire des photos.

Ça m’oblige à travailler différemment, mais c’est plutôt une bonne chose. J’ai même pris beaucoup de plaisir à faire des photos par temps couvert.

Winter Light.

 

I live in one of the sunniest regions of France, nearly 300 days of sunshine a year! Even in winter, the light is superb. By the end of December, temperatures were very mild.

Spending the whole day walking my camera in the streets of Aix-en-Provence was a real pleasure. I even got hot.

Winter is cold …

Winter came abruptly with the holidays. We continued to have beautiful sunny days but on the other hand the biting cold chilled you to the bone ! The winter…

My biggest mistake was not changing the way I dressed. On some Street walks, I happened to go home earlier because I was refrigerated. I even caught cold just before Christmas .

I started Street Photography last April, so it’s my first winter to walk the streets and it’s damn cold outside ! I had to change my dress habits and put on my big jacket with lining, pulling out my gloves and the cap for the head.

As I like to move rather light, it is a radical change. I feel embarrassed in my clothes, but I’m no longer cold ! My next goal, buy mittens because the gloves are not really practical with a camera.

Moreover, it is by removing the gloves to answer a phone call that I accidentally dropped my Ricoh GRD IV a height of more than 1 meter. He survived ! Finally no apparent damage.

Grey Sky.

At the beginning of January, the sun became more capricious and the temperatures even lower. I had settled once and for all the problem of the cold, but the lack of sun was more annoying.

In the South of France, one is too accustomed to the sun. So that I thought I had to wait for a good day (a sunny day) to get out for some Street Photography. It’s so much simpler to take pictures with the sun. One plays with the shadows, the contrasts, the colors are brilliant.

I am not saying that the sun is enough to make beautiful pictures, but it is an important element. Like a lot of people, I work, I have responsibilities as a father, husband. The only days I had the opportunity to go out to take pictures, it was not good. So what ? I wait the spring or I move my ass to go out even if the sun decided to play hide and seek ?

Diffuse light.

So I forced myself to go out even though there was no sun. And finally it’s quite interesting. We work differently. One forgets the strong contrasts. We’re focusing more on composition and I have to say it’s not my thing. I use these days without sun to improve myself.

The lack of sun has an advantage. The exposure is less problematic with my Ricoh GRD IV. I do not have to constantly modify my settings. I set my camera to A mode | F4 | ISO 400 | – 1 EV and I still have a good speed (ranging from 1/2000s to 1 / 350s depending on the conditions). After the last few weeks shooting in color, I switched back to monochrome.

Winter Fashion Week.

My Girl, a real fashionista, likes the seasons because it allows her to put on different clothes. It’s true that big fur coats (false or true), hats are very interesting photographically. (My companion wishes to specify that it is not her in the following picture ! ).

I am on the lookout for these people. No need to look far ! I Stayed still at a place with a beautiful white background and I waited for people to come to me.

Winter is here for a little while. The sun will return soon before spring. In the end, I realized that I did not need him to take pictures.

It forces me to work differently, but it’s a good thing. I even took a lot of fun making pictures in this kind of situation.
