Last week, I was on an English course with some work colleagues. Our English teacher asked us if we had any particular activities outside of our work. For me, it was quite simple, it’s Street Photography. They asked me if I exhibited or shared my photos and told them that other than my website and YouTube, I didn’t express the need to share more than that. The next day I brought them the two photo books that I had printed and was quite happy that people could see my photos in a book. The purpose of photos is to end up printed on paper, and there it was.

Behind this shot : Bus station

This photo was taken this morning, at the Little Market bus station. I have already told you about this place and I even shared a slideshow on YouTube a few weeks ago where I said a little more about several photos taken there. This morning we had planned to go to the gym with my wife, but she also had a job interview at 8:00 am. So I had to drop the children off at school and I told her that while waiting for her, I would go to Saint-Denis to take pictures in the early morning.

Ricoh GRD4 : the living dead camera

The first article I wrote on the Ricoh GRD4 dates from October 2016. It was 5 years ago ! It is as old as this Blog that I have kept for many years. I have written many articles about this camera … Surely too many, but that’s how it is. I like it a lot and although I have used other cameras, I always end up coming back to it. I started 2021 with the Ricoh GRD4 until March when I discovered the Fujifilm XF10. I don’t know if it’s the allure of novelty or just stepping out of my comfort zone, but I’ve only shot with the Fujifilm XF10 since April.

SHOOTR Issue 0

Alex Coghe asked me if I wanted to participate in the next magazine he wants to publish. It’s called SHOOTR. You can find out a little more here and even send a photo for possible publication. I didn’t quite understand the concept and it was while reading the article that I understood that Alex wanted our best photo taken so far in the street. So as much to tell you that it is very complicated. I never wondered what was my best street shot I have done so far. And yet, for several years now, I have been selecting 12 of my best photos (very subjective choice …) for my last Blog of the year. It’s a matter of having a retrospective of the past year.

Street Photography without people

Over 99% of my photos feature people. There are several reasons for this. First of all, I discovered Street Photography like this. I had this idea that what was important was the people. Everything else was just scenery. I have often insisted on the fact that I did not feel any sort of routine in always walking the same streets indefinitely because in the end it was the people that interested me and even if the places were the same, the interactions, the gestures and the people were different. The rest mattered little or nothing to me.

Work with constraints

Street photographers know that things are messy and unpredictable in the street. The light, the clutter elements, the unexpected … that’s what makes things so interesting. At least from my point of view. It requires a lot of anticipation, observation. Observe a scene to know how we will be able to compose to make it interesting.

Behind this shot : red lips & white arrow

I had already told you that the sanitary situation on Reunion Island was slowly deteriorating with the first cases of the South African variant. Well, the numbers are not good and we are entitled to curfew at 10 p.m. What does it change ? Not much I have to say. It is supposed to avoid parties or family meals in the evening. No more restaurants and bars after the curfew too. Otherwise no more restrictions. It looks like a lukewarm measure to spare the economy of the island which is already badly battered by the Covid crisis. 3 large shopping malls were also closed to avoid crowded places. No problem, people go elsewhere to shop. Not sure that this is really effective … In short, nothing really changes on the island, apart from the number of people infected by the covid which is increasing.

Monograph

Even recently, Tim Huynh the director of the documentary Fill The Frame, whom I had interviewed recently, asked me why I did not come back to Facebook. I can say it now, I was addicted to social media. Always checking on my smartphone how many views on my shared photos, how many likes … A real drug addict. It was not healthy behavior for me. I don’t know how the others deal with it, but it was unlivable for me. From time to time, I have also had photos that have been featured by Facebook, Instagram, 500px or World-Street.Photography groups. Subconsciously, for each photo shared, I hoped that my photo could please and be put forward by the curators.

Cover up that bosom …

Cover up that bosom, which I can’t endure to look on : – Par de pareils objets les âmes sont blessées, -Et cela fait venir de coupables pensées.

Molière

A quick rant against YouTube. Yesterday evening I posted a slideshow of my photos taken in January. This morning, I had the unpleasant surprise to receive an email from YouTube telling me that the thumbnail of my video was censored because it violated YouTube’s policy on nudity and sex … I’ll give you the text of the mail below.

Go against the flow …

This Blog will soon be 5 years old. It also corresponds to my practice of Street Photography. It seems to me that Michael Ernest Sweet had written that it was after seven years that one mastered his subject. I’m not sure this is true … don’t think I have nothing more to learn by now, but I think a lifetime would not be enough for me to say that I have mastered what I do . When I think about it anyway, I’ve come a long way since I posted my first photos on the 500px platform. I remember like it was yesterday and I can tell it was crap. Hyper contrasted Black & White photos without any real interest. I’m not going to show you examples but you can take my word for it. Continue reading Go against the flow …
